From Baltimore, Maryland, Multicult is the trio of guitarist/vocalist Nick Skrobisz, bassist Rebecca Burchette, and drummer Jake Cregger. All three are prolific musicians who have made their mark elsewhere: Skrobisz leads The Wayward, where he melds King Crimson musicality with world-weary post-hardcore; Burchette laid down riffs for noise-rockers Fight Amp in their early days; Cregger is best known for his breakneck blastbeats in Triac and Backslider.

In Multicult, the three boil things down to skeletal bruise-rock of the Big Black school of punishment. The sound is minimal and relentless. Burchette's distorted bass and Cregger's machine-style drumming lock together into an absolutely unshakable force – with Skrobisz' guitar chugging and clanging on top, the spirit of Gang of Four, Albini's various bands, or the industrial-grade noise-rock of New Yorkers like Cop Shoot Cop is in full effect.

But Multicult cannot be pigeonholed so easily. Even in a band with as focused a sound as this, Skrobisz is a free-thinker whose expansive approach to music shines through – he lists experimental guitarists like Bill Orcutt (Harry Pussy) and Sir Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls) as recent inspirations and he explores retro-electronic music through his current solo project Overcalc (debut album, coming soon via Sleeping Giant Glossolalia). On Simultaneity Now, rays of Skrobisz' guitar-light burst through the cold, mechanical base, and his voice ramps up, from low utterances to soaring, soul-baring screams. Songs like "Grieflex," premiered today, are as full of melodic rapture as they are austere and mechanical. It is this mix of cold and warm, of inhuman and human, that makes Multicult one of the great bands of today.

Simultaneity Now was tracked and mixed mainly by Skrobisz at his home studio in Baltimore; drums were recorded by Kevin Bernsten at Developing Nations (Skeletonwitch, Outer Heaven).

Multicult will tour the US this summer, including dates with Learning Curve labelmates Super Thief and Tongue Party.

o13 + LIVE SKULL

o13: Live Skull members complete work on electronic project's sophomore album; new music video premiered

o13 – the dark, electronic-based project of Live Skull founder/frontman Mark C and new Live Skull bassist Kent Heine – has completed work on its sophomore album, The Wild Child Takes Charge.

Recorded at Deepsea Studios in Hoboken, New Jersey, The Wild Child Takes Charge sees the NYC duo explore its layered, ominous sound – gentle, restrained, hypnotic, and brimming with potential power. Mark C's signature vocal style, heard throughout Live Skull's catalog, shines in a new light here in this context.

While plans for the album's release are still in the works, the band has premiered the music video for new track "Thirty Echoes" today.

The "Thirty Echoes" video was directed by Mark C and stars Jennifer Jaffe. Mark C says: "'Thirty Echoes' is a response to a news report, of a crimes-against-humanity trial in which the defendant was found guilty on multiple counts, the word 'guilty' echoing out thirty times in the court room. It’s our attempt to counter balance the weight of the moment by composing music and communing with nature. The video was filmed upstate on an old apple farm in Hudson, New York, and in Montauk, Long Island – locations where the magic and drama of nature are still very much at play."

Meanwhile, Mark C has reformed Live Skull, with Heine and drummer Rich Hutchins, and the band is finishing work on its first new album since 1989, to be released this year on Bronson Recordings. 

Pillars of downtown NYC noise-rock in the 1980s, alongside Sonic Youth and Swans, Live Skull has been hailed by VICE with these words: “Of the scowling noise-rockers peppering downtown Manhattan throughout the 80s, Live Skull was the leanest and meanest around." Steps toward a Live Skull reunion began in 2016 when Mark C and Hutchins teamed up to record new music for the "BC35" project, paying tribute to producer Martin Bisi who recorded some of Live Skull's material in the '80s.

Mark C says: "Since completing ‘The Wild Child Takes Charge,’ we are at work on the recording of a new Live Skull album for Bronson Recordings, to be released later this year. The core band on the recording is Rich Hutchins on drums and percussion, Mark C on guitars, vocals and synths, and new bassist Kent Heine. Live Skull members Marnie Greenholz and Thalia Zedek both appear on the record too. The record takes off from where Live Skull was headed when we abruptly disbanded in 1989. Both, o13’s ‘The Wild Child Takes Charge,’ and the new Live Skull album take their cue from the current political climate. They both lean toward protest art while exalting in the cathartic power of music, and the collaborative process of playing in a band."

INUS (aka The Institute for Navigating the Universal Self) is a pre-postapocalyptic, post-honky-tonk-prog-skronk, space Tropicalia, math-lounge powersilence trio from San Diego, California. Poking fun at the failed for-profit universities of yesteryear, the band’s live performance interweaves blistering, calculated bursts of noise with educational slideshows that riff on subversive political commentary, dada-surrealist sci-fi, scathing social critique, fake news, space cults, infomercials, spoofs on the Department of Defense, and shout-outs to corporate sponsors. The result is an unapologetically bold, utterly ridiculous, and serious-as-all-hell multimedia showcase of sophisticated polyrhythms and hog-wild-future-amusement-park timbres with vocals ranging from ring-modded falsetto to rumbling Tuvan throat skronking. INUS was originally formed as a two-piece under the name Innerds in 2011 by guitarist/vocalist Bobby Bray (The Locust, Holy Molar) and drummer Brandon Relf (Sleeping People). Joined by bassist Chad Deal (Phantom Twins) in 2016, Innerds was reborn as INUS and finished the recording of Western Spaghettification.

Pitiless are an emerging two-piece from the cold, harsh, desolate Canadian metal scene, in this case, Toronto, ON, Canada, comprised of guitarist/bassist/programmer Matt DeMille and lyricist/screamer Christopher J. Gramlich (Vilipend, Ancress).

While Amaranthine has multiple meanings, the essential one in this context is “undying.” Not only is it incredibly “metal,” but also relates to the compulsion to continue to create music, no matter the physical and mental cost. With Gramlich breaking his back opening for Dillinger Escape Plan years ago while in Vilipend, and it worsening over time, both the need to create and refusing to “die,” no matter the pain or obstacles in the path, are pillars of Pitiless’s foundation.

Founded in the late '90s, Picastro is led by Toronto-based songwriter Liz Hysen. For new album Exit, Hysen enlisted guests – Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart and Great Lake Swimmer's Tony Dekker, among others – to sing her "hushed, spectral" songs.

A former punk drummer, the Brooklyn-based Couch reinvented himself as a solo artist in 2016 via the shockingly strong Animal Instinct EP. Animal Instinct introduced the world to his soulful, synth-laced pop, earning him labels like "a Bryan Ferry pop crooner" (Louder Than War) and "unpolished and charming" (High Times). 

Couch's songs are gems – infectious rockers and ballads, descended directly from the power pop and new wave greats of the late '70s and early '80s. For debut full-length Mystery Man, Couch enlisted Twisty Cats frontman Peter Mavrogeorgis as producer and co-musician – Mavrogeorgis' production credits include Grinderman, The National, Sharon Van Etten, and more. The result: ten perfect songs, bursting with Couch's songwriting prowess and quirky charm. 

"My favorite bands are Cheap Trick and Buzzcocks," says Couch, "but this is more of a personal record than a band effort, highly influenced by power pop solo artists like Nick Lowe." Add to that, some of the synth-candy of new wavers like Duran Duran and The Psychedelic Furs, and the picture takes shape.

More than just a formidable songwriter and vocalist, Couch is a personality. With his yearning vocals and cartoonish look, he embodies the part of a lovable, lovelorn anti-hero, wandering through his songs like a doomed detective in his own neo-noir film. The neo-noir metaphor runs deep – from the album title, to the album cover, to song titles like "Vertigo" and "Framed." Couch lists films like Body Heat and Body Double as some of his biggest influences. His lyrics are equally romantic, dark, and funny: "I'll be gone before too long / But for now I'm a mystery man on a holiday / Asking you to stay," he pleads on the title track. 

Couch is a fixture in the New York scene these days, spotted regularly on the stages of haunts like Berlin and Our Wicked Lady, rarely without his signature black cap. Recent shows include gigs with Paul Collins, The Plimsouls, and nearly all the city's notable new bands on the rise.

A true original, Jonny Couch wields passion, humor, and a deep understanding of rock n' roll, to irresistible ends. As one High Times writer put it: "I once saw Couch and his band play in front of an auto-body shop in the middle of a white-hot day... Couch dropped sweating to the scorching sidewalk and reached out a trembling hand to a passerby. She stopped and gave him a chance. Maybe you should too!"

NASTIE BAND

Nastie Band is polymorphic sleaze seen through double vision. A full moon draped in a cape of jewels, weeping black tears of liberation. A rotating die of haunts, trances and hexes. "I thought it would be funny. It was terrifying." Nastie Band is a multi-headed ghoul who etches the rules on the inside of a coffin lid. Nastie Band isn't.

Sleeping Giant Glossolalia announces the July 26th release of the self-titled debut album by Nastie Band.

With leather, chains, macabre makeup, and a cast of characters including an 85-year-old vocalist, shirtless twin brothers, and iconic keyboard player Roddy Bottum (Faith No More, Imperial Teen), Nastie Band is one of New York City's most thrilling new spectacles. 

The sound: spine-chilling dirges, for fans of the creepiest depths of Sunn O))) or Today Is The Day's early work. The album opens and closes with songs featuring octogenarian Chris Kachulis' croon – a damaged, pining voice, in the spirit of the late Scott Walker. Fans of early electronic music know Kachulis as a collaborator of Bruce Haack; he sang on Haack's 1970 album, The Electric Lucifer, among other things.

"I've often stopped and wondered why I appeal to men / Men cluster to me like moths around a flame / And if their wings get burned I am not to blame," he intones maniacally on Nastie Band's first track.

Over seven songs, the band descends deep into dungeon atmospherics and minimalist metal, punctuated by Bottum's icy, signature synths. From the hypnotic throb of "Shapeshift," to the battle march of "Circle of Knives," to the dance-terror of "Relapse," Nastie Band's art-doom crackles with the type of danger, darkness, and drama that once defined New York City.

Revolver Magazine calls it, “Mind-melting destruction delivered at a lumbering, sinister pace... An incorporeal call to revelry." 

Masterminded by Sandy Smiles – the alter ego of visual artist Frank Haines, whose body of work includes film, stained glass, performance art, and more – Nastie Band's lineup has morphed since its inception and still might change from show to show. Appearing on the album are Haines, Kachulis, Bottum, guitarist Patrick Delaney (ex-Villains, Pollution), twin brothers David and Tradd Sanderson (ex-Cream Abdul Babar), drummer Elsner Nino (ex-Merchandise, Pollution), artist Reuben Lorch-Miller, and vocalist Inyang Bassey (Moby). Since the time of the recording, drummer Hisham Bharoocha (Black Dice, Soft Circle) has joined the fold as well.

Nastie Band was recorded at Seizures Palace in Brooklyn by Jason LaFarge (Swans, Devendra Banhart, Opening Bell) and mastered by James Plotkin (Merzbow, Sunn O))), Gnaw).

With the album set for a July 26th release, first single "Shapeshift" will be released June 14th on cassette as a maxi-single containing ten remix versions of the song, by members of Nastie Band, dälek, Opening Bell, and Ornament.

Originally conceptualized as a two-piece between Nelson (Electronics/Voice) & Ruiz (Percussion) but later adding Francoso (Bass/Voice), the listening experience of the band’s often 15-plus-minute-long, austere-patterned, minimalist soundscapes have a meditative quality about them, both brutal & beautiful at once, expanding organically via mechanical repetition. Obsolete lurches forward with an acoustic lull that somehow seamlessly transforms into an industrial amalgam, punctuated by the wailing chorus of unearthly electronics. The experience of the album is an ayahuasca trip through a robotic wasteland. Summoning an angry hidden power, the LP feels like a call to arms for the inhuman inhabitants of earth, speaking as much when in the midst of one of its winding percussive digressions as when vocals are present.
