DEL JUDAS + Post-Punk

"Del Judas' haunting new single 'Of Love and Death' is the soundtrack to a lonely drive out west, as the sun is pulled down by the fingertips of ghosts hitchhiking their way across the sprawling interstate. The song wears its timeless influences on it’s sleeve—lovingly giving nod to crooning melodies of Johnny Cash, Chris Isaak, Peter Murphy, with aural and aesthetic traces of the The Fields of the Nephilim."
–Post-Punk.com

Del Judas has revealed new single "Of Love and Death" today via Post-Punk.com.

Listen, here:

http://www.post-punk.com/del-judas-wanders-into-deep-gothic-americana-with-of-love-and-death/

Del Judas is the new solo incarnation of Brooklyn musician Charlie Schmid, known for his work as a drummer in metal bands such as Tombs. Under the Del Judas name, Schmid launches an entirely new persona: singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. On debut album Deity, Del Judas' sound is dark, lush, and romantic, owning a space where ghostly Americana brushes up against post-punk.

Debut album Deity will be released July 13th on Primal Architecture, the label owned by Josh Strawn of the bands Azar Swan and Vaura.

As Schmid tells it, "The project was inspired by growing up in a household that listened to country music – Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, and Hank Williams. I fell in love with Silvertone by Chris Isaak when I was a kid. I always knew I could add to the genre and put my own stamp on this style, but didn't feel ready to step out from behind the drum kit until now."

Starting there, Schmid carries these country influences into the most shadowy realms, evoking moonlit desert highways and nefarious deeds. Schmid masterfully grasps the connective tissue between country and goth – his songs bear hints of the darkness, drama, and cool of icons like Peter Murphy, Fields of the Nephilim, and Billy Idol.

Schmid gives the following insight into the album's lyrics: "This record is about the eternal interplay between the sex drive and the death drive. It’s about killing yourself, figuratively and literally. It’s about parts of yourself dying off as you go through different romantic relationships in your life and the rebirth that happens through both sensual pleasure and psychic growth."

The vocals and instruments on Deity were recorded entirely by Schmid in his apartment in Brooklyn. The album was mixed by Evan McCulloch and mastered by Colin Marston (Jarboe, Sannhet, Kayo Dot).

COARSE + Metal Injection

"Consisting of ex-Old Wounds and ex-Capsize members, the bi-coastal duo gets out right disgusting and gritty with their full on assault of the senses, in the best possible way! If you're into chaotic, mathy, gut-wrenching hardcore that has the stamina of a T-1000, Coarse is your band, and 'In Peril' your anthem."

–Metal Injection

Stream new Coarse track "In Peril" here:
http://www.metalinjection.net/av/song-premiere/coarses-new-track-in-peril-is-the-aggressive-mathcore-you-need-today

Coarse is a brand new project formed by Ryan Knowles (ex-Capsize) and Brandon Gallagher (ex-Old Wounds). The debut EP, I, will see a July 27th release date via Zegema Beach Recordings and Secret Nature.

Taking influence from the likes of Some Girls and The Dillinger Escape Plan, the two longtime friends set out to rediscover the spontaneity and surprise those bands brought, while also paying homage to the first wave of heavy metalcore as exemplified by Turmoil or Buried Alive.

A juxtaposition of sass and grit, Coarse's sound is built on Knowles and Gallagher's dual vocals (a call-and-response of high-pitched taunts and booming lows), caustic guitars and blown-out drums. Through ripping songs like "Shed," "Hoax," and "In Peril," the intensity is palpable. The noisy “Separation Is Survival” gives an introduction to the complementary alter-ego of Coarse where the band will continue to explore its more experimental side.

Setting out to create a aesthetic matching the music, Gallagher took elements from his surroundings in New York City, and channeled his experience working in the fashion industry on photoshoots for the likes of Vogue and Adidas. Being inspired by everything other than the typical visuals in hardcore, Gallagher spawned graphics, content, and collages that connect to the record, including a zine titled Fur.

The band will hit the road later this year, with plans to put out an LP in 2019.

STRUCKOUT + Exclaim!

Struckout "Don't Translate; Adapt" (video)
“...This tune doesn't follow any textbook. Whereas many would ride crescendos over the top, allowing them to explode as they hinted they would, this song subsides and maintains its calm.”
-Exclaim!

Watch the new video for the single “Don’t Translate; Adapt,” via Exclaim!, here.

Gear Gods also had positive things to say about Struckout and the track "Don't Translate; Adapt":
"Big and dark hardcore outfit Struckout have some new tunes coming out soon. It’s very exciting times. One of those tunes, more specifically, is this spooky soul “Don’t Translate; Adapt”. Do yourself a favor and get lost in this one, because it’s 100% worth your three minutes.”

Struckout’s most recent self-titled album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden (who has worked with Deafheaven, Graf Orlock, Joyce Manor, Loma Prieta, and more). It will be released on July 20th, 2018 and will be available on vinyl, CD, and cassette through Postmark Records, as well as digitally through all major outlets (including iTunes, Amazon, Apple Music, Spotify, etc.). Preorder here.

On Struckout’s third LP, topics range from the hollow nature of menial tasks at work, the exploitation therein, and the general meaninglessness of things, to what it’s like to live in the political climate of today, trying to push forward, and struggling/coming to terms with identity. This is presented with densely layered musical intensity and vocals dripping with emotion, desperate to reach out and connect with the listener. The sound fluctuates from hushed mumbles and calm, melodic breakdowns to explosive, noisy punches. The overall feeling, were one to draw on comparisons, is something in the spirit of a nuanced permutation of Fugazi.

STAGHORN + Decibel

“Wormwood III, despite your thoughts and opinions on the band’s environmental/DIY stance, politics and the intensity of their idealism which has them going all-in as opposed to just posting about it on Facebook, is a listen that’s easy to get absorbed by and lost in.”
-Decibel

Stream the new EP, Wormwood III, in its entirety via Decibel Magazine, here.

Staghorn was founded in South Florida by Jared and Lexy, later joined by a third member, Luke, and eventually transplanted to their current location of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. The collective imagined an origin story of "Staghorn" (accompanied by a comic book illustrating as such alongside their first EP), which tells of the fictional post-apocalyptic group of people who have traveled back in time to warn humanity of an animal revolt in the the future that will leave mankind on the brink of extinction. With two of the band’s members currently living predominantly off-grid, their environmental ethics and exhaustingly DIY attitude are at the heart of everything the Staghorn collective does, including their Mogwai/ Godspeed You! Black Emperor style of epic, introspective, transcendentalist compositions. Equally heavy in concept and musicality, their art is meant to create a soundtrack to a better world by highlighting that which is both bleak and hopeful along the way. Strongly principled as a do-it-yourself collective which operates Leave Your Mark Print Shop and Mills Custom Amps, the band uses their trades, creativity and compassion to affect a working, sustainable future: they create their own amps and cabs, print all of their own merch, and have records pressed that are predominantly made of recycled materials. In short, activism is the driving force behind every element of Staghorn’s art.

Wormwood III will be released as a one-sided, etched 12" EP pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Limited to 500 copies (300 on Coke bottle clear with brown smoke, 200 random color variant- a Shuga Exclusive) in partnership with Shuga Records in Chicago. LOW DOSE

Low Dose – the new Philadelphia band consisting of all three members of the late, great Fight Amp, plus electrifying frontwoman Itarya Rosenberg, formerly of Legendary Divorce – has revealed new song "For Sure," off its upcoming, self-titled debut album.

Stream Low Dose's "For Sure," here:

https://lowdosephilly.bandcamp.com/

Plans for the full album release are still in the works as the band talks with labels, but "For Sure" is a pure gem of the Nirvana/Hole school of heavy punk rock, pointing to great things ahead.

Fight Amp chose to end its run in 2016 while at the peak of its game – Revolver hailed that band's songs as "delirious sludge-punk anthems" and Stereogum likened them to Unsane – but with all three members back under one roof in Low Dose, the next chapter is here. "For Sure" burns with all the driving power and melodic prowess of Fight Amp, boosted to an even higher level by Rosenberg's howl-roar. Rosenberg states that her inspiration for Low Dose comes from an abusive relationship and long breakup she describes as "literal hell."

"For Sure" (and the album it is comes from) was recorded and mixed by Steve Poponi (Fight Amp, Psychic Teens) at Gradwell House Studios in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, and mastered by Dave Downham (Creepoid, Beach Slang).

A limited cassette single of "For Sure" and another album track, "Right On," sold out in 24 hours.

Low Dose plays its very first show, July 21st in is hometown of Philly. Stand by for more news as it develops.

July 21 - Philadelphia, PA @ Johnny Brenda's w/ Purling Hiss

STAGHORN + Metal Injection

“Intensely focused on instrumentation, Staghorn uses their arrangements and juxtaposes them with sections of a spoken word. Individual moments across the EP's 22-minute runtime showcase the band's knack for emotive rhythms and melodies and teasing time signatures. Consequently, these arrangements bolster Staghorn's message of sustainability and water conservation."

“Justin Pearson has had an interesting musical career, to say the least. From trolling Jerry Springer to collaborating with Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo, Pearson—best known by Decibel readers for being in The Locust, Dead Cross, and Retox—has been through a lot in his 27 years of loud, loud antagonism.”

OPENING BELL - Compound Eyes/Loma Atomal

Brooklyn label Sleeping Giant Glossolalia announces its 50th release: "Compound Eyes/Loma Atomal," the new EP by Opening Bell, to be released July 6th.

Stream the EP's second track, "Loma Atomal," here:

https://sleepinggiantglossolalia.bandcamp.com/album/opening-bell-compound-eyes-loma-atomal

Number Fifty in a catalog boasting releases by Insect Ark, Growing, Couch Slut, Mick Barr, and Vaz, Opening Bell's new EP is a gem: two tracks' worth of existential horror, recorded, mixed and mastered by Steve Austin of Today Is The Day at his rural Maine compound, Austin Enterprise.

Fronted by Sleeping Giant Glossolalia owner Michael Reisinger, Opening Bell's sound is mournful and visceral, conjured through a combination of live instruments and electronics. The new EP's two songs carry the spirit of Today Is The Day's more introspective, heart-wrenching moments, as well as the post-industrialism of bands like OvO.

"Compound Eyes" is fraught with anxiety; "Loma Atomal," dedicated to a friend of the band, the late Nevada Hill of Bludded Head, is bathed in depression. Both achieve their ends through minimal, deliberate means: live drums pounded Swans-style, with the restraint and precision of a drum machine; guitar, synth-bass, and electronics played spaciously, sparingly, for maximum impact; and Reisinger's vocals, drenched to a psychedelic degree in effects, as if transmitting from a deep-sea hell-cave. The sheer emotion put forth resonates long past the EP's 9-minute running time.

"Compound Eyes/Loma Atomal" will be released digitally and on cassette. The cover art was created by Chris O'Neal.

Tracklist:
1) Compound Eyes
2) Loma Atomal

Lineup:

Michael Reisinger - vocals, electronics
Armando Morales - guitar, keyboard
Nellie McKesson - drums

Reisinger is a central figure in the NYC scene, not only as musician and label owner, but as a prolific booker and promoter of live shows. Since its formation in 2014, Opening Bell has performed with Dälek (with whom a collaborative release is in the works), Primitive Man, The Austerity Program, and many of the artists who have released music on SGG.

Upcoming shows:
Aug 5 - Brooklyn, NY @ The Glove w/ Nastie Band, Stern, Vat of Acid
Sept 25 - Brooklyn, NY @ Saint Vitus w/ Bloater, River Cult
Oct 6 - Portland, ME @ Geno's - Into the Aether II Festival w/ Krallice, Skullflower, Gnaw

COARSE - I

"Angular, acidic, and anarchic... Authentically overcome with blinding rage and seething bloodlust... Think early Norma Jean if the members of Norma Jean were feral."
–MetalSucks

Coarse announces its debut EP, I, and reveals the video for first single "Shed."

Watch the "Shed" video, here:

Coarse, a brand new project formed by Ryan Knowles (ex-Capsize) and Brandon Gallagher (ex-Old Wounds), was born out of the longtime friends' shared need to start a loud band detached from any previous connection. The first release, I, a 6 song EP, will see a July 27th release date via Zegema Beach Recordings and Secret Nature.

The EP was written by Knowles and Gallagher over a week spent in a 4th floor sublet in Brooklyn, New York. The songs were then recorded at locations across the country, from San Diego to Atlanta, to various parts of New Jersey and New York City. Taking influence from the likes of Some Girls and The Dillinger Escape Plan, the duo set out to rediscover the spontaneity and surprise those bands brought, while also paying homage to the first wave of heavy metalcore as exemplified by Turmoil or Buried Alive.

Setting out to create a aesthetic matching the music, Gallagher took elements from his surroundings in New York City, and channeled his experience working in the fashion industry on photoshoots for the likes of Vogue, Adidas, and others. Being inspired by everything other than the typical visuals in hardcore, Gallagher spawned graphics, content, and collages that connect to the record. The band will release a zine entitled Fur, which will see a July 2nd release date.

Gallagher states: "The entire project is fueled by being surrounded by the uninspired."

The band will hit the road later this year, with plans to put out an LP in 2019.

Lineup:
Ryan Knowles - guitars, vocals, programming
Brandon Gallagher - drums, vocals, programming

Tracklist:
1. Shed
2. Hoax
3. Only Death
4. Separation Is Survival
5. In Peril
