CHAINLINKS: September 2017

Welcome to the new installment of Chainlinks! At the end of each month, we at The Chain reach out to friends and colleagues to find out what's been inspiring them. This time around we have recommendations from pro Muay Thai fighter Elijah Clarke, drummer Jon Syverson of Daughters, and musician/DJ Chip K.

†††

Elijah Clarke (Renzo Gracie Muay Thai)

Clarke is a Muay Thai fighter with a professional record of 6-1. Born in St. Lucia, he is based in New York City where he teaches and trains out of the Renzo Gracie Academy. His next fight is a light heavyweight bout against Juan Jackson, September 29 at Lion Fight 38, which will be televised nationally on AXS TV (and on Fight Network throughout the rest of the world).

1) Bob Marley - "Babylon System"

2) My daughter Chloe

3) Renzo Gracie Muay Thai

This week I saw one of our students at the academy and she had to cancel her membership because she moved. She told me how much she enjoyed training with us. That inspired me.

Jon Syverson (Daughters)

Syverson is best known for his drumming in Daughters. He's also a tour manager for various bands and is constantly on tour. Over all, the guy rules. Even when Daughters take their sweet-ass time writing new material for a new album, he still rules.

1) Kraftwerk - "Numbers"

I have always enjoyed some Kraftwerk. This song in particular never leaves my playlists.

2) Keurig Coffee Machines

The best part of waking up... is my Keurig machine. Oh Keurig, my heart couldn't quit you if it tried.

3) Roseanne

Do I need to explain myself here? Fucking John Goodman!? My comfort zone.

Chip K (Chorizo, Triple Hex, Silk Stalkings, Nocturne)

Chip is bassist and keyboardist for NYC bands Chorizo and Triple Hex, and a DJ known around town for her Silk Stalkings parties (with collaborator Jeanage Wasteland) and the brand new Nocturne party (with collaborator Rob Mayson) which makes its debut this Saturday, September 2nd at Ceremony in Brooklyn, with live music by Twisty Cats, Pleasure Motel, and Body Stuff.

1) Rudimentary Peni - "The Evil Clergyman"

2) Chrome - "Meet You in the Subway"

3) Martial Canterel - "Windscreen"

GOD MOTHER + Loudwire

"A pummeling rapture of audio violence."
–Loudwire

"God Mother, the Swedish powerhouse signed to Party Smasher Inc, escape easy classification. Their blend of sludge, hardcore, punk and grindcore is blistering."
–Decibel

"After 20 years of touring the world and playing thousands of shows with thousands of bands, it is hard to impress me. But Sweden has done it again. God Mother is an undeniable force... Torch, officially passed!"
–Ben Weinman, The Dillinger Escape Plan

Sweden's God Mother have launched new track "De Ovälkomna," exclusively via Loudwire. A prime slice of the band's "audio violence," the song appears on upcoming new album Vilseledd, out September 29th on Party Smasher Inc.

Listen, here:
http://loudwire.com/god-mother-de-ovalkomma-exclusive-song-premiere/

Frontman Sebastian August Campbell explains the song, which features guest vocals by Jonas Holmberg and Patrik Andersson of fellow Swedes This Gift Is A Curse"The idea of the lyrics came from one of our tours in northern Sweden during the winter, where the days are short and the night is always looming. Some days, even farther up north, the sun doesn't show face at all. Winter depression is a real factor in Scandinavia. This song is a praise for the crawling chaos behind the veil of civilized human society that lives after the sun's hours."

On new album Vilseledd, God Mother packs hardcore, grind, sludge, and noise into lethal projectiles, fueled by bilingual lyrics denouncing society's ignorance, in both Swedish and English. The sound is electrifying – inspired as much by the grinding speed of Nasum and Rotten Sound as by the almighty weight of the Melvins.

The band's 2015 debut Maktbehov was hailed by Pitchfork as "an asteroid crash of an album that renders most of its competition extinct."

Vilseledd was recorded at Soundtrade Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, the historic studio where artists from ABBA to Rammstein have made music. The album was mixed and mastered by Magnus Lindberg of Cult of Luna.

Becky DiGiglio/Justin Pearson: BORN UPSIDE DOWN + IDIOTEQ

“I had the pleasure of spending some time with photographer Becky DiGiglio and lyricist / musician Justin Pearson (THE LOCUST, Three One G Records, DEAD CROSS),  who have recently published an interesting, eye-catching collaborative photo-zine called “Born Upside Down“, a collection of photographs and thought-provoking captions that “reveal the grime and rot of life in America”. Almost instantly intrigued by both its form and concept, we sat down to discuss the role of the publisher and the processes of constructing a photobook.”
-IDIOTEQ

BORN UPSIDE DOWN, the newest 36 page print photo-zine by Becky DiGiglio and Justin Pearson, is available now via Pioneers Press as well as Three One G.

PANICKER + Ghettoblaster Magazine

“Get ready for one of the weirdest and scariest dance parties of your life.”
-Ghettoblaster Magazine

Watch the video for “Parties,” via Ghettoblaster Magazine, here.

Beginning with a music career in San Diego which included titles of distinction such as cross-dressing dancer for Optiganally Yours, drums for Thingy, Followers, and Goblin Cock, bass for Alpha Males and, simply, “everything” in Schlag-Schlag, Brent Asbury has experience in most musical areas and genres. Since his time in California, he took up producing and engineering at his current studio in Portland, OR-- anything over the years from The Locust to Michael Bolton. Of course, then, it might be hard to imagine what his own dissonant brainchild might sound like today. The answer is, surely, none of the above-- or at least, unlike any one conventional category. Asbury describes PANICKER as “blending aspects of EBM, industrial, techno and hip hop with the emotion of punk, hardcore, metal, experimental, and horror movie scores.”

This video is a single off of PANICKER’s debut self-titled LP, which is available digitally and on vinyl via Three One G Records. Each record is a unique color variant and each jacket custom screen printed with paper and ink variations. Order here.

Video directed by Eric Livingston, who is also responsible for all of Dead Cross’ new album artwork.

REPTOID + Gear Gods

“'The New Reality' is one of the heaviest things you’ll hear all summer: as abrasively noisy as it is fuzzily earworm-y. And, of course, there’s a badass concept of inter-dimensional reptilians controlling our society a la They Live."

REPTOID + New Noise

Making music the way I do in Reptoid is the most challenging thing I’ve ever done musically. I have an arsenal of gear at my disposal but only four limbs to control it all simultaneously. I don’t get to just freely play drums, the drumming has to be structured in a way that triggers the rest of the sounds. I’m essentially attempting to condense a 3 or 4 piece band into a single member. The limitations of making music this way feels like a leash that just gets tighter the more I tug on it but the music and the performance have essentially become the tugging and what was once a restriction has become the final result. It has stretched my limits creatively and physically to become Reptoid and an entirely different creature has been created in the process.”
-Jordan Sobolew (Reptoid)

PLAQUE MARKS - Anxiety Driven Nervous Worship

Plaque Marks announce the release of debut EP Anxiety Driven Nervous Worship, coming October 27th on Learning Curve Records.

Listen to "Plaque Marks," off Anxiety Driven Nervous Worship, here:

http://plaquemarks.com

Founded by three veterans of Philly's punk and hardcore scenes, whose current and recent bands include Creepoid, Fight Amp, and Ecstatic Vision – and all three of whom work shifts at the city's preeminent rock dive, Kung Fu Necktie – Plaque Marks pound out the rawest, most caustic music any of these musicians has ever made. The band is the self-proclaimed "stain on the smile of the Philadelphia music scene."

With decades of experience between them, guitarist/vocalist Mike McGinnis, bassist/vocalist Doug Sabolick, and drummer Patrick Troxell have progressed/regressed to the point of laying down the grimiest, most primitive rock n' roll clatter put to wax this year...

Pitchfork hailed McGinnis' former band Fight Amp as "Jesus Lizard dissonance [and] Danzig-esque brawn... This is no mere garage punk; this is a finely tuned assault."

Sabolick's current outfit Ecstatic Vision was described by Stereogum as "tripped-out, sun-baked, cloud-high psychedelic jams drawing from free jazz, Krautrock, and Afrobeat."

Troxell's day job, the exalted Creepoid, who have toured with the likes of Against Me! and Refused, were summed up by Noisey with these words: "The hype is swirling up around them much like the dark and portentous feedback that underpins the band’s abrasively melodic songs."

In Plaque Marks, these guys have abandoned all semblance of "finely tuned," "sun-baked," and "melodic," in favor of pure abrasion and bad living. Caveman drumming, tooth-rattling bass, painfully distorted guitars, and buried yells are the elements at play here, and on debut EP Anxiety Driven Nervous Worship they sound like they were recorded with one lone mic, hanging from a noose in a Philly warehouse. Lyrics are from the perspective of a rogue's gallery of characters – a corrupt cop, a cough syrup addict, a Christian zealot.

Plaque Marks credit Texas legends Rusted Shut and Cherubs for inspiration, as well as the early works of
contemporaries Pissed Jeans – and while some of the members' other work, particularly Fight Amp, resides in this ballpark too, Plaque Marks take it to new depths. This is noise-rock in its simplest and most corrosive state, and Anxiety Driven Nervous Worship is right at home on Minneapolis label Learning Curve Records, responsible for releases by Vaz, Hammerhead, and Gay Witch Abortion.

Anxiety Driven Nervous Worship was recorded and mixed by Matt Weber and Plaque Marks, at Gradwell House Studios in Haddon Heights, NJ, and The Bummer Basement in Philadelphia. The EP was mastered by Dave Downham at Gradwell House. The cover art was created by Dan Smith. Following the recording, The Powder Room's Gene Woolfolk was brought into the fold as a second guitarist.

REPTOID + Ghettoblaster

“This noise-punk brain-child of Jordan Sobolew attacks listeners with abrasive tones and angular drumming patterns that are sure to please fans of the sonically abstract. However, even with the project thematically assuming the perspective of a malevolent shape-shifting alien, the songs aren’t so unapproachable as to alienate all but the most die-hard of noise-philes.”
