Mexicali-based band Silent’s post-punk goth aura meets Planet B’s electronic twilight zone in this remix of “Self.” A track originally found on Silent’s debut LP, “A Century of Abuse” (released by Three One G), this collaboration has left the original instrumentation stripped, instead melding vocalist Jung Sing’s (All Leather, Maniqui Lazer) dark vibrato tones with Luke Henshaw’s (Sonida de la Frontera) robotic assaults and Justin Pearson’s (The Locust, Dead Cross, Retox) unhinged backup screams. As Sing encourages us “to rise,” the sample behind it falls, a glitchy MPC crumble punctuated by an ominous beat throughout. This remix keeps the emotive, stylistic mood of the original, while introducing a distinctly “Planet B” multilayered, hip hop approach. The result is sci-fi inspired heaviness.
