THE MANX + MetalSucks

"Consider the following as you watch the new music video for “Plasma Rib Tanks,” a song off the self-described “surrealist, experimental punk act” The Manx’s 2016 album Voyage in Bad Taste: the band is made up of full-time animators and artists who have worked on shows for Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon. In other words, it’s no surprise this video is way fucking out there!"
- MetalSucks

Watch the epic insanity that is "Plasma Rib Tanks", via MetalSucks, here.

The music video for “Plasma Rib Tanks” was directed by Mike Manasewitsch. Track is off of the band’s 2016 LP release, Voyage In Bad Taste, released on Sweatband RecordsDigital Download + LP available here.

The band also has a new remix release, Mystery Skum and The Odyssey of Goo, which is available on limited edition slime green cassette (limited to 200) as well as digitally. This is a collection of previously unreleased tracks, remixes, reinterpretations, guest spots, and noise experiments, created as a companion to Voyage in Bad Taste. Order it, here.

Lyrically, The Manx likes to make things “gooey and vibrant,” and the same can be said of their live performances (think sparkly hot pants and slime- lots of slime). In Plasma Rib Tanks, the goo-drenched gang encounter a dangerous alien foe during an innocent bake sale. From there, things get both messy and epic, as they usually do when this band is at the helm.

CHAINLINKS: August 2018

August's Chainlinks have arrived! Roughly once a month we pick the brains of our friends and colleagues to find out what's inspiring them... Today we have lists from Ra Diaz (Suicidal Tendencies), Gene Fowler (Wetnurse), and Chuck Stern (Stern).

øøø

Ra Diaz (bassist for Suicidal Tendencies)

1) The Rogue to Nowhere by Jason Christopher

Jason Christopher might not sound familiar to everyone, but he has been a hired gun / sideman to many of music’s biggest artists, from Corey Taylor and Stone Sour to Ministry and much more.
I first met Jason when I was trying to find my band’s dressing room at a big festival in Spain last year. I opened a curtain and there he was, laying on a couch, with a “who tha fuck are you?” look on his face and asking if someone could get him a barber to come cut his hair. We said hi, sat down, talked shit for a while, he went to his stage I went to mine and that was it. I didn’t know much about him but I did know he is one of those “love him or hate him” kind of guy. I’m still hesitant about the final answer, but one thing is for sure: I wanted to know his story.
We reconnected in LA, went to shows, events, played together, and became friends. And after hearing about his incredible life journey directly from him, I’m just beyond excited that now everyone can get to know him through his book. His life story. Raw, funny, sad, heroic, pathetic, hopeful, real, unreal, everything you could imagine has happened to him.
Don’t want to spoil it too much, so just make sure to grab a copy and  see if you can end up loving this very special individual as much as I did. Or hate him as much as some others do. The only sure thing is that once you start it you won’t be able to put it down.

2) Beyond the Streets (art exhibit)

A fantastic opportunity to discover the beauty of street art and its infinite ways to make a powerful statement.
Curated by Roger Gastman who co-produced Banksy’s documentary ‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’, BTS is a 40,000+ square feet exhibition of graffiti, street art and beyond, celebrating the the world's most recognizable modern art movement.
Open until August 26th, 2018.

3) Louis Cole (Musician)

Never heard of him before, but a few days ago I started seeing a couple friends reposting a video of this guy playing drums and I was hooked right away:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BhJlsxQnVvu/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=18qmkcjmk3p7i
At first I thought that was it, but I then started realizing and discovering the amazing talent this guy has. He plays every single instrument on his songs. This dude can PLAY EVERYTHING. And sing and write and pretty much do whatever he wants. Such an incredible, fun, and exciting musician.

His solo album is about to come out August 10th, and after checking out his first single, to say I’m excited would be an understatement. Keep an eye on him and enjoy:

øøø

Gene Fowler (Wetnurse)

1) Joe Rogan Experience

2) Deniece Williams - "Free"

I've been starting each day with it.

3) Grounding

Putting my feet in sand, grass, or sea. Connecting with something greater than you.

øøø

Chuck Stern (Stern)

1) Brutal Truth - Sounds of the Animal Kingdom

2) Buzzoven - At a Loss

3) Stephen King - "The Langoliers" ABC miniseries

QUI + No Echo

“As the Geto Boys once so eloquently said, there's ‘no tellin what's bein' thought up in the mind of a lunatic.’ But if I could imagine it for a moment, I would think that if a lunatic created music, it would sound something like Qui's discography.”
- No Echo

Listen to the new track, “Icky Mouth”, via No Echo, here.

Qui’s latest LP, Snuh, extrapolates on their genre-bending brand of avant-garde rock. Working again with long time producer Toshi Kasai, the duo has integrated more shades of unlikely forms and timbres along with their always-present penchant for abrasive noise punk. Snuh is at once both playful and belligerent, switching abruptly from heavy to soft, screaming to crooning, sweet to hostile.

Snuh will be available digitally on iTunes as well as physically through Three One G Records on 100 pink and 200 black 180 gram vinyl. Free CD will be included with vinyl purchase. Preorder here.
Records will also be available via Antena Krzyku, Macina Dischi will be releasing the album on CD, and Sweatband Records will be releasing a limited run of cassettes.

Upcoming shows: August 3rd - Los Angeles, CA @ The Echo w/ Retox

Out today: BC35 cassette

Sleeping Giant Glossolalia's cassette release of BC35 is out today.

Released on vinyl in April, BC35 is a sprawling collaboration of various artists from within New York's avant-rock scene, celebrating the recent 35th anniversary of Martin Bisi's legendary BC Studio. A collection of improvs and new compositions, all recorded live at BC Studio, the album features current and former members of Sonic Youth, Swans, White Hills, Foetus, Cop Shoot Cop, Live Skull, Insect Ark, Pop, 1280, and more.

Buy the BC35 cassette, here:
https://sleepinggiantglossolalia.bandcamp.com/album/bc-35-the-35-year-anniversary-of-bc-studio

Brooklyn label Sleeping Giant Glossolalia is one of the coolest voices in the New York scene today, curating a wide range of progressive sounds. Recently dropping its 50th release, the label has put out music by Growing, Couch Slut, Mick Barr, Vaz, and more. Founder Michael Reisinger is a central figure in the NYC scene, as musician (Opening Bell, Final Boss) and prolific booker and promoter of live shows.

"The credits read like a who’s who of New York’s experimental underground: members of Swans, Sonic Youth, Pop. 1280, Parlor Walls, Live Skull, Cop Shoot Cop, Foetus, and many, many more... It’s a sonic embodiment of risk-taking, rule-breaking, and antithesis that celebrates the endurance of a man and a space tied directly to New York’s noise, art-rock, punk, free jazz, hip-hop, and alternative movements... Across 13 tracks, Bisi demonstrates—as a producer, engineer, and general facilitator of the avant-garde—what’s made his name familiar to liner-notes obsessives and New York noise nerds for three and a half decades. Showcasing the opaque, roaring, visceral sound he’s come to epitomize, BC35 acts as a totem to his enduring role in NYC’s rock mythos..."
–Pitchfork

"Thirty-five years ago, in an old factory space in Gowanus, Brooklyn, the producer and musician Martin Bisi established BC Studio, where he’s has been at the controls for underground classics such as Sonic Youth’s “Bad Moon Rising”and the Dresden Dolls’ self-titled debut. Fittingly, Mr. Bisi is honoring this anniversary with a righteous racket: first by releasing a compilation with bands he has produced, as well as some he put together and one that was resurrected for the occasion, and then by celebrating that album with those groups at clubs in Brooklyn, Boston and Philadelphia...The evening promises to be ear-splittingly glorious."
–The New York Times

"The New York noise scene that emerged with and after No-Wave can feel like the story of Sonic Youth and its near-orbit, due to that band’s massive influence. But Downtown artnoise can as easily be understood by viewing Martin Bisi as a nexus... In early 2016, his Gowanus, Brooklyn studio, sort-of eponymously named 'BC,' had been in operation for 35 years, and to commemorate the milestone, a weekend-long series of performances took place in the facility..."

Out today: AVOLA - Zone

Avola's debut album, Zone, is out today on Sleeping Giant Glossolalia.

Avola is the newest incarnation of Portland-based musician/producer Vern Avola, known for her work under the name EMS, and as a member of Elrond and Prizehog.

Listen and buy Zone, here:
https://sleepinggiantglossolalia.bandcamp.com/album/avola-zone

SGG boss Michael Reisinger describes the Avola sound as "a squalling, disorienting world of heaviness... The journey is enthralling."

Zone is a place of high tension, where contrasting layers of sound combine in thrilling ways. Cinematic synth swells and transcendent guitar drones layer with glitchy beds of arcade-game beeps, white noise, and gunshot snares. Anthemic, soaring potential is kept in check by dissonance and disjointedness.

Zone was recorded and mixed by Avola at a house in the desert near Joshua Tree, California.

Zone is not music of any one genre – it is electronic in nature but possesses a weight that makes it relevant in the context of heavy rockers like Thrones, Big Business and Oxbow, with whom Avola has shared stages in the past.

Sleeping Giant Glossolalia is releasing Zone on cassette (as part of the label's ongoing cassette series that has also included Mick Barr, Growing, and more) and on glow-in-the-dark vinyl (a split release with Nadine Records).

Avola is on tour now:

July 27 - Portland, OR @ The Firkin Tavern
July 29 - Portland, OR @ HFBW
Aug 2 - Portland, OR @ Atlantis Lounge
Aug 4 - Moscow, ID @ Pritchard Art Gallery
Aug 6 - Billings, MT @ Smiling Dog Records
Aug 7 - Minot, ND @ 62 Doors Gallery
Aug 10 - Minneapolis, MN @ Feel Field
Aug 11 - Iowa City, IA @ Gabe's Upstairs
Aug 13 - Minneapolis, MN @ Memory Lanes
Aug 14 - Minneapolis, MN @ Kitty Cat Klub
Aug 15 - Bismarck, ND @ Rhythm Records
Aug 16 - Bozeman, MT @ Haufbrau
Aug 17 - Spokane, WA @ Object Space
Aug 18 - Portland, OR @ High Water Mark
Aug 23 - Portland, OR @ The Waypost

"Portland-based musician Vern Avola makes electronic music that combines a ferocious wall of sound with a deceptively subtle sense of dynamics. One could call it noise music, except that Avola puts enough into weirdly shifting harmonics as she does into abrasion. One could also call it drone, but Avola's approach to synth music is too rhythmic, itchy, and restless to fit easily under that label. She's recently shared bills with artists including electro-pop eccentric EMA, metal band Big Business, and long-running experimental rock outfit Oxbow, to give you some idea of the difficulty of pigeonholing the project."
–Tone Madison

Out today: COARSE - I

"Coarse's debut EP, I, develops Knowles and Gallagher's dueling vocals and glitchy, blown-out arrangements into fuel for one of the most seething, satisfying metalcore albums of the year."
–Revolver

"Former members of Capsize and Old Wounds, Coarse are on their way to becoming a staple in every hardcore lover’s personal collection."
–Alternative Press

"Consisting of ex-Old Wounds and ex-Capsize members, the bi-coastal duo gets out right disgusting and gritty with their full on assault of the senses, in the best possible way! If you're into chaotic, mathy, gut-wrenching hardcore that has the stamina of a T-1000, Coarse is your band, and 'In Peril' your anthem."
–Metal Injection

"Angular, acidic, and anarchic... Authentically overcome with blinding rage and seething bloodlust... Think early Norma Jean if the members of Norma Jean were feral."
–MetalSucks

Coarse's debut EP, I, is out today on Zegema Beach Recordings and Secret Nature.

Listen to the full EP, here:

Buy the EP on vinyl, here:

Coarse is a new project formed by Ryan Knowles (ex-Capsize) and Brandon Gallagher (ex-Old Wounds). Written in Brooklyn, New York, then recorded at locations across the country, from San Diego to Atlanta, to New Jersey and New York, Coarse's debut EP, I, takes influence from the spontaneity of bands such as Some Girls and The Dillinger Escape Plan, while paying homage to the first wave of heavy metalcore as exemplified by Turmoil or Buried Alive.

A juxtaposition of sass and grit, Coarse's sound is built on Knowles and Gallagher's dual vocals, caustic guitars and blown-out drums. Through ripping songs like "Shed," "Hoax," and "In Peril," the intensity is palpable. The noisy “Separation Is Survival” gives an introduction to the band's more experimental side. Reviews of the EP call it "one of the most seething, satisfying metalcore albums of the year" (Revolver) and "chaotic, mathy, gut-wrenching hardcore" (Metal Injection).

The EP's artwork was created entirely by Gallagher, taking inspiration from his surroundings in New York City, and channeling his experience working in the fashion industry on photoshoots for the likes of Vogue and Adidas. Gallagher also created a companion zine, Fur, which further explores the aesthetic.

DEL JUDAS x Statiqbloom + Revolver

Revolver Magazine has premiered Statiqbloom's remix of Del Judas' song, "Of Love and Death."

Del Judas is the "country-goth" persona of Brooklyn musician Charlie Schmid, previously known for his work as drummer for metal bands such as Tombs. Under the Del Judas guise, Schmid makes dark, romantic ballads that skirt the line between Americana and post-punk. Debut album Deity, containing the original version of "Of Love and Death," was released this month on Primal Architecture, the label owned by Josh Strawn of Azar Swan.

Statiqbloom's new remix pushes the Del Judas sound in an ominous, throbbing, industrial direction – as Revolver's Zoe Camp puts it, "reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails and Skinny Puppy by way of Chris Isaak and David Lynch." It is an exciting collaboration, crossing genre lines and resulting in a captivating new track.

Buy Del Judas' debut album Deity, here:

https://deljudasprml.bandcamp.com/

"The soundtrack to a lonely drive out west, as the sun is pulled down by the fingertips of ghosts hitchhiking their way across the sprawling interstate... Lovingly giving nod to crooning melodies of Johnny Cash, Chris Isaak, Peter Murphy, with aural and aesthetic traces of the The Fields of the Nephilim."
–Post-Punk.com

"Schmid’s voice is rendered in a Chris Isaak-like croon, and the production has a hushed quality you might expect from someone making a record in a Brooklyn apartment surrounded by neighbors. By pulling you in close to his voice, Schmid also pulls you close to the darkness that lurks behind his words... A slow, nocturnal drive down the dark side of memory lane. While electric guitars swoon and fade like passing lights on the side of the highway, Schmid sings about seeking pleasure in the present to escape the pain of his past."
–Invisible Oranges

"A spectral yet contemporary take on broodingly dark country... A sultry and vulnerable sensuality."
–Joy of Violent Movement

NETHERLANDS - Black Gaia

On the eve of its North American tour with Mastodon and Dinosaur Jr, and hot on the heels of latest EP Hope Porn, Brooklyn band Netherlands presents its brand new full-length album: Black Gaia.

Netherlands' fifth release in all, Black Gaia is set for an August 24th launch on Records And Tapes Records.

Stream Black Gaia's first single "Army!" here:
http://www.metalsucks.net/2018/07/24/exclusive-track-premiere-army-by-netherlands/

Mastodon handpicked Netherlands to join them on the upcoming September tour and it is a perfect match. Netherlands' style, honed to excellence in the years since its beginnings in 2010, is a wild-eyed, metallic version of rock. Black Gaia finds the band at the pinnacle of its very own mountain – a place of lurching grooves, psychedelic lava-spewing, and sugary hooks that infect the ears. Rabid-ape drums, plate-shifting synthbass, kaleidoscopic guitar, and transcendent vocals (a range from gentle falsetto to soaring howl) converge in a singular psych-prog-sludge-pop sound sharing DNA with The Beach Boys, Earth Wind and Fire, Van Halen, Dio, The Melvins, The Boredoms, Torche, and Mutoid Man.

A shrewd cultural critic whose lyrics reflect his increasing alarm and disillusionment, frontman Timo Ellis gives this description of Black Gaia's message: "The record is a scream of anger and grief, and maybe a call-to-arms to do whatever it takes to avert the coming civilization-collapsing environmental mega-catastrophe. It represents the almost-last fumes of hope I have for humanity's ability to undergo any sort of mass voluntary transformation toward sanity. It is about the desperate need for everyone to wake up in order to disrupt the ongoing orgy of openly nihilistic, capitalist, consumer-based ignorance and delusion... to wake up from the myth of endless progress."

Black Gaia was recorded by Ellis and Rich Crescenti at Metrosonic Studios in Brooklyn, mixed by Tom Tierney at Spaceman Sound, and mastered by Ron Shaffer at Atlantic West Studios.

The album closes with a cover of Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home."

The album artwork was created by Alley Weber and Todd Kancar.

Ellis' past credits include stints playing in Cibo Matto, collaborations with Yoko Ono, and much more. Having clocked in more than 25 years in the New York scene, Ellis is at the center of a wide circle of musicians and artists. In 2017 he launched Shame Party, a surreal "talk show" where he interviews his friends in absurd one-minute clips. Recent guests/victims include members of TV On The Radio, SZA, KMFDM, Candiria, and Mutilation Rites: http://shameparty.tv

BC35 + Cvlt Nation + cassette

Cvlt Nation has premiered a live video, shot at the BC35 album release show at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn in April 2018, showing NYC noise-rock "supergroup" Nowhere Near blazing through a 20-minute jam. Nowhere Near consists of producer Martin Bisi, Bob Bert (ex-Sonic Youth), Alyse Lamb (Parlor Walls), Ivan Lip (Pop. 1280) and Skeleton Boy (Art Gray Noizz Quintet). As Cvlt Nation founder Sean Reveron enthuses, "Every time I watch this I get lost in a sonic state of bliss!"

STRUCKOUT + BrooklynVegan

Image result for struckout band
"Aside from having awesome song tiles like “Accrued Vacation Days (Daniel Listens To Krautrock Once),” “I Kind Of Think Emo Music Is Fucking Pointless,” and “We’ve Tried Nothing And We’re All Out Of Ideas,” Struckout has eight tracks of awesome, ripping, noisy punk that fans of other Jack Shirley collaborators will surely dig. There’s bits of all kinds of familiar music, like The Jesus Lizard’s swampy post-hardcore, more experimental stuff like Slint or Sonic Youth, raging grunge-punk like Nirvana’s faster songs, and more, but Struckout bring all these familiar sounds together and come out with something that feels fresh."
-Brooklyn Vegan

Check out the full-album stream of Struckout’s new self-titled LP, via Brooklyn Vegan, here.

Long Beach-based noisy post-hardcore band Struckout’s most recent self-titled album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden (who has worked with Deafheaven, Graf Orlock, Joyce Manor, Loma Prieta, and more). It will be released tomorrow, July 20th, and will be available on vinyl, CD, and cassette through Postmark Records, as well as digitally through all major outlets (including iTunes, Amazon, Apple Music, Spotify, etc.). Preorder here.

On Struckout’s third LP, topics range from the hollow nature of menial tasks at work, the exploitation therein, and the general meaninglessness of things, to what it’s like to live in the political climate of today, trying to push forward, and struggling/coming to terms with identity. This is presented with densely layered musical intensity and vocals dripping with emotion, desperate to reach out and connect with the listener. The sound fluctuates from hushed mumbles and calm, melodic breakdowns to explosive, noisy punches. The overall feeling, were one to draw on comparisons, is something in the spirit of a nuanced permutation of Fugazi.
