Out today: POUND - ••

Pound's sophomore album, ••, is out today on Silent Pendulum Records.

Marrying the chaos of bands like The Locust, with the galaxy-sized grooves of Meshuggah, the Seattle-based Pound whips up a wholly original racket that is both head-scratchingly complex and sock-you-in-the-gut heavy. The duo – guitarist Ryan Schutte and drummer David Stickney – uses gear that is as unique as its sound: Schutte plays a baritone 9-string guitar and Stickney plays two drumkits, positioned at a 90-degree angle.

The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation, Cephalic Carnage).

"A bizarre but deeply satisfying mix of grind, sludge, mathcore, d-beat, and groove metal... The duo — guitarist Ryan Schutte and drummer Dave Stickney — are a force to be reckoned with, creating throbbing, double-jointed music that also feels caveman-level heavy."
–Kerrang!

"Seattle duo Pound—whose sound can best be described as a heavy fusion of mathcore, grind and Meshuggah-esque grooves—have unleashed their latest video... The performance video highlights the duo’s musicianship—guitarist Ryan Schutte plays a nine-string baritone guitar and drummer David Stickney’s kit is actually a custom build combining two different drum kits. Together, there’s no need for a guitarist or vocalist."
–Decibel

"Seattle’s forward-thinking yet ferociously primordial math-grind duo Pound... Intertwining the raw, seething aesthetic mentality of grinding mathcore with the deft musicianship, unconventional rhythms, and unbridled creativity of djent and death metal."
–Invisible Oranges

"Off-kilter time signatures collide with unshakeable grooves while skronky, dissonant chords match up with an almost post-hardcore melodic sensibility. It’s as if Meshuggah, Botch and Coalesce teamed up to form a new band that pushed the boundaries of each far beyond anything they’ve ever attempted before."
–MetalSucks

"The intersection of genres at play here makes for a dizzying display of technical prowess and blunt, pummeling intensity... Prepare for one of the boldest (and best) metal albums you’ll encounter this year."
–Heavy Blog Is Heavy

"There are about 17,832 different slippery widdles and squiddles, vacuum cleaner riffs, extremely tight snare rolls, brutal but punchy grooves, blast beats, playfully murderous half-hooks, ear-splitting noise lines, and leveling drum patterns stuffed into these 33 minutes... It’s a combination of grind’s total lack of an attention span, djent’s tendency to constantly bounce around a central point, and knuckle-dragging hardcore’s love of cavemanish groove."
–Last Rites

"Pound’s new album might be what it would sound like if The Dillinger Escape Plan and Thou played at the same time on the same stage... A mind-bending, absolutely thrilling experience."
–Captured Howls

CAR BOMB - "Dissect Yourself"

CAR BOMB REVEALS FIRST SINGLE OFF NEW ALBUM; EUROPEAN TOUR WITH ANIMALS AS LEADERS BEGINS

Car Bomb presents "Dissect Yourself," the first single from its upcoming, fourth album.

Slated for a Fall 2019 release, the as-yet-untitled album is being recorded by the band in Brooklyn at Silver Cord Studio (Gojira), and mixed by Nolly Getgood (Periphery, Animals As Leaders). Stay tuned for more details.

Based in and around New York City, Car Bomb has made its name over the past two decades as master craftsmen of metal that is as heavy as it is progressive. Stereogum described the quartet's third album (2016's Meta) as "a rhythmically abstruse variety of extreme metal... hallucinatory time-stretching noises... unpredictable detours into melodic territory." Guitar World stated, "the eclectic album bursts with complex arrangements, brutal, off-kilter riffs, and deep grooves." Kerrang! reviewed a live performance with these words: "Their psychotic turbo-thrash is disgustingly disorientating... one relentless onslaught of time-chopping violence."

Car Bomb embarks on a European tour with Animals As Leaders on June 1st then returns to Europe later in the summer for a run of festivals and headline dates.

SECRET FUN CLUB + Gear Gods

“...amazing interplay between the bass and drums that ebbs and flows in and out of wacky unison lines and rhythms, Gallegos and Rieder stay tight as can be while simultaneously channeling some sort of unearthly, monstrous chaos that just hits you in the best possible way. It’s pretty remarkable what the two of them are able to do with just bass and drums, and this is an excellent example of a band carving out their own unique sound while retaining enough familiarity to be accessible.”
- Gear Gods

Listen to Secret Fun Club's latest track, "Pat Minotaur", via Gear Gods, here.

San Diego‘s Secret Fun Club has been the longstanding musical outlet for drummer and engineer Sal Gallegos (Some Girls, Three One G) and bassist John Rieder. An ongoing collaboration that formerly included guitarist Nathan Joyner (Hot Nerds, Some Girls, All Leather), the band has been making odd, challenging, and relentlessly heavy music on its own terms since 2000. A duo of bass and drums since 2007, the two have mastered doomy, frenetic noise with occasional forays into quiet minimalism and copy-and-paste sound sculpture. W.T. Nelson (Geronimo, Bastard Noise) has collaborated with his brood of Trogotronic outboard gear to contribute painful frequencies across the range of human hearing. The newest album enlists his assistance again, along with equally brutal noisemakers Justin Pearson (Dead Cross, The Locust, Retox, Planet B), Sam Lopez and Esteban Flores.

The band's upcoming album, 101, was recorded in San Diego, CA by Sal Gallegos and John Rieder. Mastered by Nathan Joyner. It will be released digitally as well as on smoke-colored vinyl through Three One G Records. Preorder, here.

Hex Machine headlines its hometown of Richmond this week, followed by a US tour in July with The Wayward:

May 17 - Richmond, VA @ Wonderland
July 17 - Richmond, VA @ Wonderland w/ The Wayward
July 18 - Raleigh, NC @ Slim’s w/ The Wayward
July 19 - Athens GA @ Caledonia Lounge w/ The Wayward
July 20 - Atlanta, GA @ The Bakery w/ The Wayward
July 22 - St Louis, MO @ FOAM w/ The Wayward
July 24 - Pittsburgh, PA @ Howlers w/ The Wayward, Microwaves
July 25 - Cambridge, MA @ Hong Kong w/ The Wayward
July 27 - Philadelphia, PA @ Mothership w/ The Wayward, Stinking Lizaveta

Founded by Thomas in 2004, and with drummer Dave Witte (Municipal Waste, Human Remains) on board in the early days, Hex Machine made waves through the underground for a good eight years. Across two EPs and two full-lengths, the band crafted and refined its own unique strain of heavy noise-rock, and toured hard with the likes of Clutch and Melt-Banana. The sound had roots in the realms of The Jesus Lizard, The Melvins, and the Dischord Records scene, but from there it reached toward something new.

The last the world heard of Hex Machine was 2012's Fixator album. Fixator wowed, laying down a superior brand of noise-rock that flirted with big choruses, metallic drumming, and a range of guitar sounds that would foreshadow things to come.

Following Fixator's release, Thomas and newest Hex drummer Douglas Andrae joined Today Is The Day, proceeding to play hundreds of shows across the world as the rhythm section behind mercurial cult hero Steve Austin.

With new album Cave Painting in hand, Hex Machine returns now, a new beast. Thanks in part to the intensity of the Today Is The Day stint, Hex Machine emerges reborn and sailing forward, entirely free of conventions. Cave Painting sees a new layer of moody, early-'80s drama creep in to Hex Machine's sound. On top of sludgy, lurching rhythms that nod to Richmond elders like Sliang Laos and Breadwinner, Thomas' guitar radiates post-punk tones of the XTC, The Police, and Killing Joke variety – "Evil Andy Summers" was a description once assigned to Duane Denison's style and it applies nicely to Thomas' as well. Track 3, a cover of The Psychedelic Furs' "President Gas," fits in seamlessly.

The progression shown on Cave Painting is inspiring. Seven years have passed and Hex Machine has evolved into what it is – a new and unclassifiable thing, expelling its demons in its own way, saturating the noisy and metallic with melody and ambience.

GERONIMO + Revolver

“Featuring members of Man Is the Bastard, Sleestak, Unicorn, Slowrider and more, Geronimo is a trio hellbent on exploring the uncharted regions of sound…”
- Revolver Magazine

Watch Geronimo's newest video, described by Revolver Magazine as "dark" and "hallucinatory", here.

Geronimo (comprised of Nelson, Ruiz, and Francoso) remains generally vague in terms of its conception, intentions, and processes, instead allowing its sonic blasts to shriek for themselves. Still, Nelson explains that, “The misanthropic sound itself is designed to question the shameful / shit-assed gilded-age state of affairs: idea being if you bang your head against the wall long enough, you start to see things.” Comprised of members from bands such as Man Is The Bastard/Bastard Noise, Sleestak, Noise Instrument, Unicorn and Slowrider, these lifelong musicians and experimentalists continue to treat their music as an exercise in carefully crafting, without compromise, raw minimalist power that will turn this deeply flawed society on its head in order to expose its rotten underbelly.

This video was created for the title track off of the band's upcoming LP, Obsolete. It will be released digitally as well as on colored vinyl through Three One G Records on May 31st. Preorder, here.

SECRET FUN CLUB + Self-Titled

Secret Fun Club
"...like a chaotic director’s cut of The Lego Movie after the ayahuasca kicks in…."
- Self-Titled Magazine

Watch the newest Secret Fun Club video for "Mastodon Rickles", created by former SFC guitarist Nathan Joyner, via Self-Titled Magazine, here.

A duo of bass and drums since 2007, Sal and John began writing, demoing, and performing brutal new arrangements for two solid years, finally recording what would become the Skull With Antlers LP during the first half of 2009. With drums that call to mind Bonham (if he had preferred meth to booze) playing sides of beef and bass tones that alternate between motorcycle rumble and insectoid modulation and filtering, the band has mastered doomy, frenetic noise with occasional forays into quiet minimalism and copy-and-paste sound sculpture.

ZEALOT R.I.P. + Decibel

“Zealot R.I.P. have quite the pedigree, with members of Pig Destroyer, Darkest Hour, CombatWoundedVeteran, Frodus and more joining forces to crank out metallic punk jams.”
- Decibel Magazine

Stream this brand new band's premiere track, "Magnetic Field of Dreams," via Decibel Magazine, here.

Zealot R.I.P. started years ago when life-long friends, Jason Hamacher (Frodus, Battery, CombatWoundedVeteran) & Mike Schleibaum, decided to collaborate and write music that’s fast and heavy. Between Schleibaum’s relentless touring in Darkest Hour and Hamacher’s extensive documentary work in Syria, it took a few years for them to settle into a sound that’s somewhere between Entombed, Dead Kennedys and Born Against. The band was recently solidified with the additions of Pig Destroyer’s Blake Harrison and Fairweather’s Peter Tsouras. This metal amalgam, upon forming, went immediately into the studio and recorded a handful of songs that are brutally unhinged.

As a bizarre and radical opening reception to the world, Zealot R.I.P. is playing their first show on May 20th at the Swedish Embassy in Washington D.C. The Embassy is hosting a concert and panel discussion around the US debut of the new book, Blood.Fire.Death, on the history of Swedish metal.

The self-titled EP will be released digitally as well as an ultra limited edition 12” EP on vinyl through Three One G Records on May 20th. Preorder, here.

POUND + Decibel

POUND: SEATTLE SHREDDERS REVEAL NEW MUSIC VIDEO, KICK OFF WEST COAST TOUR IN SUPPORT OF UPCOMING SOPHOMORE ALBUM

"Seattle duo Pound—whose sound can best be described as a heavy fusion of mathcore, grind and Meshuggah-esque grooves—have unleashed their latest video for “x-.+.+.x-.+.x-.x-.+,” a song from their sophomore album •• (this symbol thing is a common occurrence). The performance video highlights the duo’s musicianship—guitarist Ryan Schutte plays a nine-string baritone guitar and drummer David Stickney’s kit is actually a custom build combining two different drum kits. Together, there’s no need for a guitarist or vocalist; “x-.+.+.x-.+.x-.x-.+” is busy enough and already blowing minds as is."
