NOTT - Hiraeth

NOTT: Pacific Northwest duo's doom-death masterpiece "Hiraeth" coming via Silent Pendulum Records; new track streaming now

Silent Pendulum Records announces the August 18th release of Hiraeth, the new album by Nott.

Stream the album's first single "Torn," here: https://silentpendulumrecords.bandcamp.com/album/hiraeth

Pre-order the album, here: https://silentpendulumrecords.com/products/nott-hiraeth

Consisting of only two members – Tyler Campbell and Julia Geaman – Nott summons an all-smothering vortex of doom-death that might best be described as "a scenic tour of bottomless hell pits."
With viscous tones, and with tempos ranging from mid-paced to glacial, Hiraeth unfolds like a slow-motion free fall into the abyss.

Despite the velocity, the album is riveting, Punctuated by pick scrapes, bass drops, and Geaman's spirited drumming, tracks like "Torn" capture the attention for the full duration. Reference points include Immolation, Meshuggah, and Ulcerate.

Campbell's vocals tear though the mix like talons through flesh. An early review of the band from Decibel Magazine stated: "The fire on this recording is almost physical... The vocal scourge truly sets this apart."

"As the ominous consumes us all, we descend further unto awe," Campbell bellows on Hiraeth's first single, "Torn." It is an almost ecstatic depiction of a surrender to the void.

The album title, Hiraeth, is a Welsh word with no direct translation, but which Campbell defines as "the longing for what once was, and what you cannot go back to." The title takes on new weight, in light of Campbell's and Geaman's personal stories. The two migrated to their current homes in the Pacific Northwest, by way of Alaska and Romania, respectively.

Campbell states: "Nott began as a solo studio project up in Alaska with a few DIY EPs. While working on the debut full-length, The Wretched Sounds, I brought the operation down to Seattle with the intention of expanding the project into a band. A few months before the pandemic, Julia and I began working together."

Geaman states: "I was born in Romania and, because things were chaotic in the '90s after Communism fell, we moved to South Africa for 8 years, then finally immigrated to Canada. I remember feeling like I had nothing to do and, after all that moving and chaos, it was suddenly quiet. Maybe I started playing drums to fill that quiet."

Hiraeth's guitars, bass, and vocals were tracked by Campbell at his home studio in Bothell, WA, with assistance from Lance Fohrenkam. Drums were engineered by Matt Roach at Rain City Recorders in Vancouver, BC. The album was mixed by Campbell and mastered by Davide Aroldi. The cover art was created by Kieran Wakeman.

1) Torn
2) Stasis
3) Null
4) Rend
5) Stare
6) Writhe
7) Hiraeth

MIRAKLER - How I Became the Devil

MIRAKLER: Pittsburgh trio delivers "noise rock that would make Steve Albini blush" on Reptilian Records debut "How I Became the Devil"; first single "Egg" streaming now

From Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mirakler's debut full-length, How I Became the Devil, will be released June 23rd on Reptilian Records.

Stream first single, "Egg," here: https://www.invisibleoranges.com/mirakler-egg/

Harsh, grimy tones. Sweet, steamrolling riffs. Vocals exuding pure pain. Over the course of 15 tracks, Mirakler spits out a sound that lands in a dark crack between Unsane, Today Is The Day, and Nirvana. The exuberance of Mirakler's twisted, metallic noise rock is intensified by the volatility of frontman Daniel Gene's voice as it ricochets between wounded pleas and full-bore screams, calling to mind the emotional storms of the great Steve Austin.

Invisible Oranges reports: "The album evokes the crushing sense of anguish that accompanies sludge and perhaps the sounds of primordial grunge from the late ‘80s into a pained concoction that attacks the senses beyond the ears." In new single "Egg," they detect "sounds of early noise rock that would make Steve Albini blush."

Reptilian Records boss Chris X, who has marched to his own beat, a step ahead of the masses, since founding the label in the '90s, says: "Honestly, I listen to this record every day. Some days I can't think of anything to follow it with, so I listen to it again and still notice new things!"

Mirakler frontman Daniel Gene states: "I like the feeling of danger in music. I’ve always strived to recreate the feeling I had as a child when I first heard Public Enemy’s 'It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.' I realize I heard that through the naive ears of a 9-year-old, but it struck me. I had no clue what I was actually listening to. Not going to pretend like I did. But that sound did something to me. And that was the initial attraction. I was drawn to that immediacy: that danger."

"The theme of 'How I Became the Devil' is communication and, typically, the breakdown in its absence," states Gene. "Basically, how our inability to properly communicate builds up layer upon layer of scar tissue comprised of different fears."

How I Became the Devil was recorded and mixed by Scot Moriarty at Backroom Studios, and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege.

The band hits the road for a Northeast tour in July, including dates with Cherubs, and will play the venerable No Coast Fest in Texas in October.

Tracklist:
1) The Good Thief
2) Ecstatic Fields of Love and Grace
3) Egg
4) I Am Violence
5) The Bad Thief
6) Instant Drugs
7) This Is Brit Pop
8) Wet Ground Brings Rain
9) The Fireworks and the Stars
10) Kenny
11) How Many More Will Die
12) Exodus (A Continuous Mutation)
13) My Battery Is Low and It's Getting Dark
14) Christ B.C.
15) The Hill

Lineup:
Daniel Gene - guitar, vocals
Will Novalis - bass
Matt Langille - drums
John Kerr - drums on the album

SEEK - Kokyou De Shinu Otoko

SEEK: Japanese blackened hardcore beast to release debut full-length album via Silent Pendulum Records

From Osaka, Japan, Seek will release its debut full-length album via Silent Pendulum Records on
June 23rd.

Titled Kokyou De Shinu Otoko – translated to English as The Man Dies in His Hometown

50 minutes in all,
Kokyou De Shinu Otoko sees the Osaka trio unleashing storms of blackened hardcore. Corrosive tones and impatient blasts carry forth woeful riffs of dread and mourning. Vocalist Suguru Inomoto roars urgently in his native Japanese, occasionally accompanying his own voice with haunting clean vocals that soar alongside the screams. "Thread a thin needle through dry sand," he bellows on the album's title track, a song confronting mortality. "A moth with no pattern dies elegantly."

Seek's sound is a dark, raw affair with great emotional depth, recommended for fans of everything from Neurosis' tormented post-metal to Acme's hellish hardcore, and of newer bands like Hexis and Downfall of Gaia.

Silent Pendulum founder Michael Kadnar, who also drums for Downfall of Gaia, states: "I had the pleasure of playing with Seek in Japan the last time I toured there. I was honestly blown away by their music. Fast forward a few years, I asked them if they need help with their new album. I'm very excited to give them a US platform and to share the stage with them again this July."

Kadnar will return to Japan in July, this time as the drummer for orchestral metal greats So Hideous, who will play fours shows with Seek.

Seek (w/ So Hideous):
July 6 - Osaka, Japan @ Hokage

BODY STUFF - "World Peace"

BODY STUFF delivers "hardcore Bruce Springsteen" energy on upcoming new album "Body Stuff 4"; new single "World Peace" streaming now

NYC duo Body Stuff has debuted new single "World Peace" from its upcoming new album, Body Stuff 4.

Of the new single, Body Stuff vocalist/songwriter Curran Reynolds says: "I wrote this song as a message of hope and homecoming, for anyone who needs it."

On the song's chorus, he sings: "A Russian winter of the soul / Spring has come, you're going home / There is a crack in the wall / I had a premonition of something wonderful."

Body Stuff 4 will be released June 2nd via The Chain, the company co-founded by Reynolds, Deaf Club's Justin Pearson, and Trace Amount's Brandon Gallagher.

A review in the May 2023 issue of The Wire Magazine describes the sound as "a massive surge of passionate energy that occasionally comes across like a hardcore Bruce Springsteen."

A new review from Stereogum states, "Reynolds' hearty howl sounds like Springsteen fully embracing his Suicide influence," also adding comparisons to Sisters of Mercy and New York hardcore.

The album contains a guest vocal appearance by 1980s pop icon Tiffany ("I Think We're Alone Now"), as well as a remix by Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu).

Body Stuff was founded by Reynolds and collaborator Ryan Jones in New York City in 2013. The duo has released three EPs to date; Body Stuff 4 is the first full-length.

THE NUMBER TWELVE LOOKS LIKE YOU - Put On Your Rosy Red Glasses

THE NUMBER TWELVE LOOKS LIKE YOU: Silent Pendulum Records celebrates debut album's 20th anniversary with elaborate vinyl reissue

Silent Pendulum Records has launched the official pre-order for the 20-year anniversary reissue of The Number Twelve Looks Like You's debut album, Put On Your Rosy Red Glasses.

Produced by Jayson DeZuzio, the 2003 album introduced the New Jersey band to the world, by way of an experimental brand of metalcore that ricochets between technicality, brutality, chaos, and heartbreak. Reference points include the early works of bands such as The Dillinger Escape Plan and A Life Once Lost. In the year of its release, PunkNews enthused: "This is their first release and it's pretty stunning."

More recently, reflecting on the band's career, Kerrang! reported: "The New Jersey mathcore quartet spent the better part of the 2000s making a name for themselves with their bizarre and untamable mixture of death metal, hardcore, screamo, and triple-jointed prog, as well as with their cathartic live performances."

The Number Twelve vocalist Jesse Korman states: "If you told 18-year-old me that we would be celebrating the 20-year anniversary of 'Put On Your Rosy Red Glasses' by releasing it on limited edition vinyl and that people would actually buy them… I would say, no way anyone plays this album more than once. So, to everyone who has played this album more than once, you play a very important role in our lives. Thank you."

Silent Pendulum's 20th anniversary reissue includes three separate vinyl pressings, featuring alternate covers (black, red, pink) and multiple vinyl colors. See complete details and p

Out today: THE TUNNEL - Shudder

Shudder, the new album by San Francisco trio The Tunnel, is out today on Learning Curve Records.

“I see our music as a hot-wired transformer in a dead dark city," says The Tunnel's Jeff Wagner. "The dystopian future is now."

Stabs of growling bass, discordant peals of guitar, and robotic drums set the stage for Wagner’s unmistakable voice – a sinister croon, caked in distortion and sleaze. Bearing traces of such pompadoured antiheroes as Nick Cave, Wagner’s dark twang is offset by the band’s mechanized throb. These two energies – the sultry noir and the cold machinery – grind against each other and create the sparks that are The Tunnel.

Upcoming shows:
May 29 – Minneapolis, MN @ Caterwaul Festival
June 17 – San Francisco, CA @ The Kilowatt

CHAT PILE x Caterwaul 2023

CHAT PILE joins Caterwaul 2023 lineup

The organizers of Caterwaul 2023 proudly announce the addition of Chat Pile, returning to the festival for the second time.

Chat Pile bassist Stin states: "We’re truly excited to bring our particular brand of trash can music to the noise rock freaks of Caterwaul for the second year in a row. We can’t wait to get to hang with our friends from far and wide while getting to witness the many killer, legendary bands on the lineup!”

Chat Pile's 2022 full-length, God's Country, was one of the year's most talked-about albums, putting forth a harrowing, metallic version of noise rock that cut to the bone. Pitchfork's review of the album called it "terrifying and thrilling in equal measure... a vivid rendering of the towering piles of poison littering America’s psychic landscape." The Oklahoma City band's latest release, Brothers in Christ, is a split EP with Kansas City's Nerver, who are also on the Caterwaul 2023 lineup.

Now in its second year, Caterwaul is an annual fest, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, celebrating noise rock in all its forms. Caterwaul 2023 is a 4-day affair, May 26-29th, with stages at two revered Minneapolis venues: Palmer's and Mortimer's.

In addition to Chat Pile and Nerver, this year's highlights include: Bay Area punk legends Flipper (with Cows frontman Shannon Selberg on vocals), Texas noise rock royalty Cherubs, the US debut of Ireland's Hands Up Who Wants To Die, and a litany of other greats, including Child Bite, Djunah, Elephant Rifle, Multicult, Nerver, The Tunnel, Tongue Party, USA Nails, Vaz, and more.

In planning their routes, to and from the fest, many of the Caterwaul artists have joined forces and teamed up to create exciting package tours, thereby spreading the spirit of Caterwaul all across the nation – a phenomenon the fest organizers have dubbed "Caterwaul Run."

KING YOSEF - "110817"

KING YOSEF drops "110817" music video, directed by Static Dress vocalist Olli Appleyard

King Yosef's official music video for new track "110817" is out now.

Stream the video, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTrNfPa2Fmo

Released in April, King Yosef's new, Kurt Ballou-produced solo album, An Underlying Hum, mixes savage metallic hardcore with haunting hooks and electronic elements. Revolver Magazine has called it “a scathing onslaught of heavy hardcore chugs a la Code Orange and wire-sparking industrial-metal fuckery." "110817" is the album's harshest, noisiest track.

The "110817" video was created by Olli Appleyard of UK band Static Dress. Yosef says this about the collab: "When it came time to think about a video for the shortest and most aggressive song on the album, it made sense to me to leave some creative breathing room. So, I approached Olli, who is not only a good friend but also one of my favorite creative people in the world, and explained some lore to him and let him go. We had talked about doing a King Yosef video together for years so I am glad we got to get this done and I don't think it'll be the last."

While Yosef has been candid in stating that the new album is the result of his deep dives into childhood trauma, he reveals little about the meaning behind this specific song: "110817 is a number that only myself and very specific members of my family might ever know. It is not a date. It has to do with a person and there's a reason this song is the most nihilistic and directly confrontational in that context. Not ready to fully disclose yet but, some people might be able to guess."

Most importantly, Yosef states: "This song is in my top three to play live because no matter what genre of show, people end up moving in some regard."

Out today: INTERCOURSE - Halo Castration Institute

Halo Castration Institute, the new album by Intercourse, is out today on Learning Curve Records.

Choosing brutish simplicity as their weapon of choice, the band prowls the shadowy fringes of noise rock and hardcore, a zone also occupied by the likes of Chat Pile and Couch Slut. "We’re too weird for a lot of the hardcore scene and too aggro for the weird scene," states vocalist Tarek Ahmed.

The band's sole founding member, Ahmed wields a singular vocal style that smashes the line between the sublime and the ridiculous. With a strangulated roar, almost cartoonish in its unhinged glory, Ahmed spouts painfully direct, often poetic, lyrics about the pain of existence. His songs reference a litany of characters from his own past, growing up in the backwoods of Connecticut as an Egyptian kid in the post-9/11 years, and from the annals of true crime.

Stream the album, here: https://learningcurverecords.bandcamp.com/album/intercourse-halo-castration-institute-lp

More info, here: https://thechainworld.blogspot.com/2023/03/intercourse-halo-castration-institute.html

“These Connecticut crusaders meld the crushing noise of The Jesus Lizard with ample hardcore influences, prompting lead singer Tarek Ahmed to quip: ‘We’re too weird for a lot of the hardcore scene and too aggro for the weird scene.’ Pounding drums give way to Ahmed’s pained and shouted vocals, while guitars have you bobbing and bouncing to the crazed atmosphere…”
–Invisible Oranges

“On their forthcoming album, and ninth release in less than a decade, 'Halo Castration Institute,' Intercourse crystalize all of their varied sonic influences into an aural maelstrom that metalheads, record store clerks, AmRep devotees, and outsider hardcore vinyl collectors will approve of.”
–No Echo

"Intercourse will release their new record 'Halo Castration Institute' on May 5th, and is now streaming the single 'Where Losers Go To Die.' Given the name of the single and the album, you can surely expect a positive experience that's just rainbows and sunshine, right? Nope."
–Metal Injection

"If you're looking for something heavy, pay attention... Fast, aggressive, brings together elements of noise rock and also some sludge as well... Sort of in the same way that Chat Pile does, but I would say they do strike a different vibe."
–The Needle Drop

"Intercourse has admirably carved out a niche for themselves... a niche for those hankering for a more misanthropic Flipper, or Unsane with the snark turned up to 12."
–Lambgoat

"Connecticut’s finest purveyors of hardcore-tinged noise rock are back, ready to provide you with another soundtrack for your worst moments."
–New Noise

"They have this personality about them that I just adore. This self-deprecating, brilliant noise-rock... This is easily the best thing they have done in their career, this record... I'd love to see a tour which was, like, Portrayal of Guilt with Chat Pile and Intercourse."
–The Heavyist Podcast

"Intercourse make unhinged hardcore/noise rock – the kind that’s weeks off its meds with no consulting therapist in sight."
–Everything Is Noise

"Although they sometimes walk in the Jesus Lizard's massive and might footsteps, these outragous noise-rockers ultimately forge their own twisted sonic pathway."
–The Tinnitist

"Learning Curve Records have announced they will release ‘Halo Castration Institute‘, the latest album from Connecticut-based noise rock/post-hardcore outsiders Intercourse. Go check out 'Where Losers Go to Die' if you’re into getting yelled at."
–Grizzly Butts

"Time for more Intercourse."

GRAF ORLOCK - End Credits

"The first single is opening track "Mega City Blues," which finds Graf Orlock sounding as punishing and uncompromising as ever."
—BrooklynVegan

Stream the opening track off of Graf Orlock's final album, End Credits, via BrooklynVegan, here:

Going back to the halcyon days of stupidity, Graf Orlock was formed by Jason Schmidt and Alan Hunter sometime at the end of 2003 in the wasted outskirts of Los Angeles. Gorlock reacted against everything that was melodic metal at the time and sought to find a way to express ideas through something that just confused people: movies. As time went on and the band toured in over 40 countries, they would like to believe some of that has changed, but will bet against it. In the period between 2007 and 2019, Graf Orlock toured Europe, Japan, South East Asia, Australia, Puerto Rico and North America endlessly. The band contains members of Ghostlimb, Sweat, Dangers, Daisy Chain, and probably every other band related to the LA area Vitriol Records roster. The band has released a total of 5 LPs and 7 EPs across Level-Plane Records, Dude Records, Adagio830 Records, Cosmic Note Records and their own label, Vitriol. End Credits will be the 8th EP release, and last official release for the band.

End Credits  was recorded live to tape, mixed and mastered in 2019/2023 by Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden Studios in Oakland, notable for recording Deafheaven (Grammy Nominated), Jerome’s Dream, Loma Prieta, Oathbreaker, etc. End Credits will be released June 23rd on Vitriol Records. This release will include die-cut sleeves with burn marks and fire colored vinyl. Preorder, here.

KONINGSOR - "End of an Error"

KONINGSOR: Austin rippers deliver "rough, tough mathcore" on new single "End of an Error"; official music video streaming now

Austin band Koningsor has premiered the official music video for new song "End of an Error."

New EP Death Process drops June 2nd via Silent Pendulum Records.

Lambgoat bestows this high praise upon the new song: "'End of an Error' tears through its lean two-minute runtime like an Olympic sprinter. Guitars are violent and coarse, yet composed and precise. The rhythm section is like the mechanical rabbit at a dog race coaxing top speeds out of the riffs and melodies, but command supreme power itself – drums stampede through your skull while the bass rattles your spinal column. The vocals top it all off with a searing quality to them, well-enunciated while still matching the chaos of the instrumentation. This is rough, tough mathcore brought up a notch."

Toiling in the Austin scene since 2016 – releasing three EPs and sharpening its craft by way of shows with the likes of Norma Jean and Lorna Shore – Koningsor reached the point of collapse before finding the strength and inspiration to finish the new EP. Drummer Andy Sadler explains: "Josh, Paul, and I all had parents pass away during the recording process. Josh lost his mother, Paul and I both lost our fathers. The album title and all the lyrics are about the struggle that came from the pain and the mix of emotions brought about by their losses."

Death Process was engineered and mixed by Kieran Krebs (Mothman, Televangelist) and mastered by The Dillinger Escape Plan's Kevin Antreassian.
The EP sees the band bashing out jagged and exuberant rave-ups in the fashion of early Botch, turbo-boosted with torrents of double bass drumming and fleet-fingered string handling. For all its frantic twists and turns, the songs are anchored by hard metallic grooves and an undercurrent of emotion.

THE TUNNEL - "Tungsten"

THE TUNNEL: "The Birthday Party meets Big Black" on San Francisco trio's new single "Tungsten"; official music video streaming now

San Francisco trio The Tunnel have premiered the music video for new song “Tungsten," from the upcoming seventh album, Shudder. Shudder will be released May 12th via Learning Curve Records.

“I see our music as a hot-wired transformer in a dead dark city," says The Tunnel's Jeff Wagner. "The dystopian future is now. I think the last few years’ apocalyptic vibe only sharpened our music’s sense of struggle and pleasure in the face of grim paranoia."

Stabs of growling bass, discordant peals of guitar, and robotic drums set the stage for Wagner’s unmistakable voice – a sinister croon, caked in distortion and sleaze. Bearing traces of such pompadoured antiheroes as Nick Cave, Wagner’s dark and theatrical twang is offset by the band’s mechanized throb. These two energies – the sultry noir and the cold machinery – grind against each other and create the sparks that are The Tunnel. Think, The Birthday Party meets Big Black. Or, to describe it in cinematic terms, it might be film noir and cyberpunk projected onto the same screen. Indeed, the band counts directors like Lynch and Cronenberg amongst its greatest influences.

June 17 – San Francisco, CA @ The Kilowatt
