TURBID NORTH releases scorching "Slaves" drum playthrough

Texas trio Turbid North has released a new video showing drummer Jono Garrett playing "Slaves," a song off the band's new album, The Decline.

Equally ferocious as a blaster and a groover, Garrett's prowess is on full display as he powers through the song. In addition to Turbid North, Garrett beats the skins for hard rockers Mos Generator and grinders Shock Withdrawal.

One of the first crucial metal releases of 2023, The Decline melds punishing death-grind with crushing doom-rock and lustrous melody. Decibel Magazine calls the new album, "the meeting point between Black Sabbath and Napalm Death" and Metal Injection hails it as "Mastodon if they were in a John Wick state of revenge rage."

Speaking on the song, "Slaves," frontman Nick Forkel has stated: "'Slaves' is about being a prisoner of your own mind. We all create battles in our heads."

With The Decline released in January to mass acclaim, Turbid North will embark on a European tour with Unearth and Misery Index in April.

Turbid North guitarist/vocalist Nick Forkel states: "'The Road' is about survival in the bleakest situations. How far you'll push yourself to keep going. Even if the world you're living in isn't all that great to begin with. Suffer today, to live another day." The music video conveys the song's message by way of post-apocalyptic imagery reminiscent of the Cormac McCarthy novel with which it shares a title.

While Forkel and his bandmates bassist Chris O'Toole (Unearth) and drummer Jono Garrett (Shock Withdrawal, Mos Generator) display Napalm Death-level grindcore chops, "The Road" showcases the band's doom-rock side. The song is a driving, radiant, 12/8 rocker in line with the likes of Metallica, Crowbar, and Mastodon.

'The Road' leans heavily into the doomed and stoned side of Turbid North, featuring chugging riffs and bellowing vocals. Founded in Alaska in the early '00s, Turbid North relocated to Fort Worth, Texas in 2007 and finally delivered its debut album, Orogeny, in 2011 via Unearth frontman Trevor Phipps' Ironclad Recordings. The current lineup of Forkel, O'Toole, and Garrett was solidified in 2012. Formed in Alaska, based now in Fort Worth, TX, Turbid North unites punishing death-grind with crushing doom and a touch of soaring rock elements. Napalm Death and Neurosis are reference points, as are David Gilmour's leads.
