Invisible Oranges writer Tom Campagna reports: “Already known for wreaking chaos on a global scale, Swedish metallic hardcore unit God Mother are returning with their new EP Sinneseld and more of their trademark madness. I originally ran into this band at New York City’s Terminal 5 as part of the original run of Dillinger Escape Plan farewell shows… Their live performance was enough to make sure I followed them on subsequent releases, including their previous full-length, 2017’s Vilseledd which was featured on Dillinger’s label Party Smasher."

Sinneseld will be released May 10th and vocalist Sebastian Campbell describes it as their “most sprawling release” so far, with tracks ranging from cowbell-banging rockers to blasts of grindcore. The EP was mixed by God Mother's Michael Dahlström and mastered by Cult of Luna's Magnus Lindberg (Refused, Birds in Row).

Regarding the new single, "Spellcraft," Campbell states: "My love of fantasy roleplaying games really came alive in this song, leaning heavily towards the celebration of fantasy through old films like 'Mio, My Son,' 'Conan,' and 'The Sword and the Sorcerer.' I’ve dungeon mastered a lot, and I loved writing it. Performing this song makes my whole self energized like nothing else."

With its debut album, Maktbehov, released in 2015, God Mother caught the ear of the Dillinger Escape Plan's Ben Weinman, who went on to release the band's 2017 album, Vilseledd, on his own label, Party Smasher Inc, and to give the band an opening slot on one of Dillinger's final farewell shows in New York that year.

Weinman endorsed the band with these words: "After 20 years of touring the world and playing thousands of shows with thousands of bands, it is hard to impress me. But Sweden has done it again. God Mother is an undeniable 'force majeure' that demands attention like bands did in the old days, by just being that f*cking good. Torch, officially passed!"

Pitchfork's review of Vilseledd read: "Sweden’s God Mother blend d-beat, grind, math rock, and more, contorting tradition rather than kowtowing to it... The quartet are miles ahead of their peers."

Almost five years later, 2022's Obeveklig EP was startlingly lean and mean, expressing all the pent up frustrations of the pandemic era – the sound of a chained dog released from its cage. "Converge at their most hostile," was the assessment delivered by metal blog Last Rites. European tours with Suffocation and Frontierer followed.

Returning now in 2024, God Mother is back with Sinneseld. The fourth in a series of 9-letter titles, all in the band's native Swedish, the word "sinneseld" is an archaic description of mental illness, translating to English as "mind fire." Vocalist Sebastian Campbell states: "The world has also changed a lot for the worse in the time between Obeveklig and Sinneseld. We have struggled to hold onto mental health and our sense of purpose, with the reality around us."

With the world in as fragile a state as ever, and with the band members building families in the midst of it – Campbell and guitarist Max Lindström both have children on the way and drummer Michael Dahlström just welcomed his second child – a feeling of "carpe diem" pervades Sinneseld. Where Obeveklig was lean and mean, Sinneseld sees the band exploring new musical directions, as if to say "the time is now, try everything, do it today."

Amongst Sinneseld's five tracks lies the most accessible song of the band's career, as well as the most punishing one. "It’s our most sprawling release, musically," says Campbell. "'Human+' is probably the hardest song we’ve ever written, sharing space with the rock n' roll vibe of 'Big Things Coming.'"

Unlike any other song in God Mother's catalog, "Big Things Coming" is an infectious, cowbell-heavy banger that sees Campbell trade his scream for a throaty yell. "It was fun to write and arrange something that sounded more clear and direct than what we’ve done before," he says.

Lyrically, the song skewers the artificiality of our image-based, content-driven culture, with Campbell facetiously boasting about his imaginary successes. "In a world where your self worth is based off of your ability to produce or build something, there is no weight, truth or real act," he states. "Our digital selves are just a product to consume and to convey to others how good we are."

Sinneseld was mixed by God Mother's Michael Dahlström and mastered by Cult of Luna's Magnus Lindberg (Refused, Birds in Row).

Swedish band God Mother has revealed a new "studio diary" video giving a behind-the-scenes look at the making of its new EP, Obeveklig.

Shot on location at Soundtrade Studios in Stockholm with engineer Staffan Birkedal, the video shows the jovial Swedes butchering "Sweet Child o' Mine" and the Super Mario Bros. theme, as well as tracking portions of their own new songs from the upcoming new EP.

Obeveklig was mixed and mastered by Cult of Luna drummer Magnus Lindberg. The EP will see a May 6th release (digital and 7" vinyl).

"Musically, on this EP, we were influenced by bands that we toured with," states drummer Michael Dahlström. "Seeing other great acts live always inspires you to get better."

The experience of living in the COVID-19 era has been an influence on the band as well. Like most bands on Earth, God Mother was stopped in its tracks by the global events of early 2020; the ravenous energy heard on Obeveklig is that of a band raring to go after an unplanned hiatus. Furthermore, all four band members switched careers during the pandemic and half of them became fathers. The urgency of Obeveklig is the sound of a band with a heightened awareness of the fact that life is change, life is transformation, and all we have is the present day.

Vilseledd was recorded at Soundtrade Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, the historic studio where artists from ABBA to Rammstein have made music. The album was mixed and mastered by Magnus Lindberg of Cult of Luna.

Party Smasher Inc, the label founded by Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan, announces the September 29th release of Vilseledd, the new album by Stockholm, Sweden's God Mother.

Across 14 tracks, God Mother packs hardcore, grind, sludge, and noise into lethal projectiles, fueled by bilingual lyrics denouncing society's ignorance, in both Swedish and English. The sound is electrifying – inspired as much by the grinding speed of Nasum and Rotten Sound as by the almighty weight of the Melvins.

The Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist and Party Smasher label founder Ben Weinman has stated this: "After 20 years of touring the world and playing thousands of shows with thousands of bands, it is hard to impress me. But Sweden has done it again. God Mother is an undeniable force majeure that demands attention like bands did in the old days, by just being that fucking good. Torch, officially passed!"

Directed by Jakob Jennerholm Hammar, the video's raw vibe was achieved using VHS tapes. Drummer Michael Dahlstrom explains the story behind the song: "The words come from a poem called 'Fear,"by Neil Cathan, a writer based in the UK... It's about the idea that all evil and violence stems from fear. Every terrible thing that we do to each other comes from fear, and every terrible thing makes us more afraid, so things accelerate and build until they reach a crescendo like they did in 1939."

Founded in 2012 in Stockholm, Sweden, God Mother churns out an electrifying sound, inspired as much by the grinding speed of Nasum and Rotten Sound as by the almighty weight of the Melvins.

Consisting of frontman Sebastian August Campbell, guitarist Max Lindstrom, bassist Daniel Noring, and drummer Michael Dahlstrom, God Mother packs hardcore, grind, sludge, and noise into lethal projectiles, fueled by bilingual lyrics denouncing society's ignorance, in both Swedish and English.

In a few short years the band has made its mark across the globe, from Europe to Central America to Africa, on tours with the likes of Cult Leader, sharpening its live game into an all-out assault that caught the eye of none other than Party Smasher Inc founder and The Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman. 

Weinman states: "For some reason, out of all the European countries producing independent punk and heavy music, it was always the bands from Sweden that made the noise even us arrogant pricks in the United States had to notice. To be completely honest, after 20 years of touring the world and playing thousands of shows with thousands of bands, it is hard to impress me. But Sweden has done it again. God Mother is an undeniable force majeure that demands attention like bands did in the old days, by just being that fucking good. Torch, officially passed!"

Drummer Michael Dahlstrom says this about the signing: "We are super excited and proud to be part of the Party Smasher Inc family. Ever since we started talking about signing earlier this year we have felt extremely welcome. We played the Party Smasher showcase at SXSW and we are supporting The Dillinger Escape Plan around Europe this summer. Party Smasher Inc is a place for creativity with a great DIY attitude that we can relate to, and we couldn't be more thrilled about releasing our new album here."

God Mother's upcoming sophomore album will be released on Party Smasher Inc this fall.
