DUMB WAITER + Metal Injection

“Dumb Waiter is the absolutely weird-as-shit mathy riff fest that you need in your life today. Dumb Waiter will release their new album Tsk on May 15 and we're premiering their brand new track 'LTMBCN' right now. Oh, and no – none of the song titles have vowels and none of the songs have lyrics. You're meant to feel out of place.”
— Metal Injection

Watch the video for “LTMBCN”, via Metal Injection, here.

Formed in 2012 in Richmond, VA, Dumb Waiter was founded by Nick Crider and Nathaniel Roseberry. As Nick explains it, the band’s formation came out of humorous necessity: “Back then, I was the booking agent at non-profit venue space and I had booked Lightning Bolt and wanted to be a complete brat and play the show as well. So I asked Nathaniel to start a noise power violence band. After a few practices, Nath brought in more players (Tristan Brennis and Keith Paul) and Dumb Waiter was formed.” Since then, the band has mutated to what could be described as avant-garde jazz rock, looking to move away from being pigeonholed into the “mathrock” label that they generally don’t relate to.

Tsk was recorded by Kevin Bernsten (Full of Hell, Magrudergrind, Weekend Nachos, Noisem) at Developing Nations in Baltimore. Mastered by James Plotkin (Bongripper, Conan). Album will be available digitally, on limited edition cassette, and limited edition vinyl (250 copies on solid mint with black splatter) May 15th. Preorder, here.

Video was filmed, directed, and animated by band member Nick Crider. Shot in Palm Springs, CA.

Out today: LA ARMADA - Songs of the Exiled I: Chicago

"La Armada transform adversity into community... With the EP series 'Songs of the Exiled,' the Dominican-born hardcore band honor the cities they’ve called home... They also continue to challenge themselves as musicians, increasingly injecting Afro-Caribbean rhythms into their ripping hardcore, punk, and metal."
–Chicago Reader

La Armada's new mini-EP, Songs of the Exiled I: Chicago, is out today. It is the first installment in the band's Songs of the Exiled project, a series of releases, "each dedicated to one of the places we were born, or have lived in, that have shaped us and our political stances."

Stream it, here:
https://armadahardcore.bandcamp.com/album/songs-of-the-exiled-i-chicago

Founded in the Dominican Republic in 2001, La Armada played a major role in building up the hardcore punk scene in its home country in the '00s, before then emigrating to the US – first to Florida, then to Chicago. The band's highly unique story, of having made its mark in the Dominican Republic, then uprooting and starting again in the US, will be expressed and honored through Songs of the Exiled.

A self-described "crossover" band, the quintet's sound blends influences from metal, hardcore punk, and Caribbean music. In La Armada's hands, thrashing hardcore, inspired by bands ranging from Bad Brains to Death, is intensified by traditional Latin rhythms.

Just as its music reflects its background, so does its message. La Armada describes its political stance to be that of "decolonizing and anti-fascist lyrics, which criticize the politics of both the US and the Dominican Republic." Denouncing historical atrocities and also pointing out flaws in modern-day society – racism, police brutality, prisons for profit, to name a few – the band has put its money where its mouth is, with a long history of organizing concerts and events to raise funds for causes such as the American Civil Liberties Union and for grassroots organizations in the Caribbean.

Songs of the Exiled I: Chicago marks the recorded debut of La Armada's new vocalist, Casper Torres (ex-KDC).

La Armada has toured with Sick of It All, Propagandhi, Death by Stereo, and more. Stay tuned for news of the next live shows.

ÖTZI - "Moths"

ÖTZI reveals new song "Moths" from upcoming Artoffact Records album "Storm"

Oakland post-punk group Ötzi have revealed "Moths," the opening track from their sophomore album, Storm.

Storm will be released May 22nd on Artoffact Records.

Ötzi bassist/vocalist Akiko Sampson states, “‘Moths’ is about metamorphosis. Sometimes, the only way to stay true to your core self is to create change from within. It’s about making peace with uncertainty, and knowing that these changes are both necessary and natural.”

Stream the song, here:

https://open.spotify.com/album/22prSBx5rHghs8vLQ2s2YG

Pre-order the album, here:
https://otzi.bandcamp.com/album/storm

On Storm, Ötzi pierces the heart with their dark and passionate style of post-punk. Brooding and aggressive sounds intertwine, via dual vocals, flanged-out guitar, austere bass and tense drumming. Anthemic hooks, worthy of '80s new wave radio hits, are delivered by way of stripped-down production, the rawness of which makes the songs penetrate even deeper.

While nodding to the commanding howls of Siouxsie and the Banshees, the anarcho-punk of Crass, and the laments of early The Cure, Ötzi's realness is what separates them from the pack of stylish bands currently resurrecting dark sounds of the '80s. Sampson states: “We ascribe punk and feminist ethics to our music and our lives, and that’s something that will never change. We’ve all been playing music for decades, which has mostly gone under the radar. We’ve fought uphill battles to earn respect as humans and as musicians, and that gives our music a bolder, broader edge. The 'darkness' found in our music isn’t existential dread or moroseness, it’s a reflection of our perspectives as femmes in an often hostile world.”

Since their formation in 2014, Ötzi has toured the world with the likes of The Chameleons, Deerhoof, Modern English, and She Past Away. "What matters to us is that our shows have a radical energy, that trans and queer people, people of color and women feel celebrated and safe in the short time we have together, and that through music we create a world where our audience feels honored and powerful themselves," says Sampson. Stand by for news of their next live shows.

SIK OHESO + Aversionline

"I hear everything from heartfelt emo to punk- or pop-tinged indie rock with varying degrees of soaring hooks, post-whatever shimmers and pulses, a few rippin' solos... there's certainly no one-size-fits-all bucket for this one."
- Aversionline

Stream the "diverse, hook-filled debut album" from Sik Oheso, via Aversionline, here.

This debut LP is a ten-song collection of the best singles and EPs this band, created in Brooklyn but now spread across the country, has released thus far. Here, they've been mixed properly for the first time and given the special treatment a record deserves. All tracks deal with issues that affect “aging former punks,” says Yi, and are deeply personal. The sound is influenced by the likes of Iron Chic, Warm Thoughts, Mike Krol, The Smashing Pumpkins, and The Strokes.

Sik Oheso was recorded by band members, and mixed and Mastered by Zach Tuch (Touche Amore, Warm Thoughts). It will be released on limited silk-screened cover and randomly colored vinyl, as well as digitally, on March 27, 2020. Preorder, here.

1. Suds
2. Where the Buffalo Sleep
3. Animalia

THRONE TORCHER + Metal Injection

“Throne Torcher didn't just want to release their new song "The Mechanics of a Nightmare" without a little horrifying bombast. So they filmed an 18-minute long self-produced horror film shot in an abandoned Manitoba sanitarium to go along with it. Both the film and the music are unsettling as all hell, so mission accomplished in a pretty big way.”
- Metal Injection

Watch the self-produced horror film for title track "The Mechanics of a Nightmare", via Metal Injection, here.

Described by punk rock bible Maximumrocknroll as “anthemic, blasty hardcore for the A.D.D.generation,” Winnipeg trio Throne Torcher blend traditional thrash and hardcore punk with jazz and ambient influences to create something wholly unique. With its origins dating back almost a decade under the controversial name Terrorist (changed after cops tried to raid the band’s apartment when their merch order was sent to "TERRORIST HQ"), the group has a reputation for a meticulously-crafted, self-produced sound – culminating in The Mechanics of a Nightmare. Throne Torcher’s combination of raw, violent aggression and progressive, technical instrumentation has made them a cult favourite in heavy music circles. With a new record and an accompanying, self-produced horror film (shot in an abandoned Manitoba sanitarium), the trio is set to re-emerge on the scene after years of self-imposed studio exile with this bizarre and grim descent into decadence and self annihilation.

Album will be released digitally on June 5th. Preorder, here.

Of the new song, La Armada's Paul Rivera states: "'Gun Nation' is a look at the possible underlying causes of mass killings in America, a phenomena that has become almost normalized. We tried to look at it from an objective angle and pose questions like, 'why does it continue to happen?' and 'why are the the killers overwhelmingly white males?'"

New mini-EP Songs of the Exiled I: Chicago drops Friday, March 27th. It is the first installment in the Songs of the Exiled series, which pays tribute to the various places the band has called home.

Founded in the Dominican Republic in 2001, La Armada played a major role in building up the hardcore punk scene in its home country in the '00s, before then emigrating to the US – first to Florida, then to Chicago. SOLO ANSAMBLIS - "Fosforinis Baseinas" video

SOLO ANSAMBLIS: Lithuanian post-punk squad reveals surreal "Fosforinis Baseinas" music video

New Noise has premiered the official music video for Solo Ansamblis' track, "Fosforinis Baseinas."

The song appears on the Lithuanian band's new, sophomore album, Olos, out now on Artoffact Records.

Stream the video, here:
https://newnoisemagazine.com/video-premiere-solo-ansamblis-fosforinis-baseinas/

Stream the album and buy, here:
https://soloansamblis.bandcamp.com/

An exciting new voice in an emerging Baltic scene, Solo Ansamblis mixes moody post-punk and robotic techno, with lyrics sung entirely in the band's native language. Using a combination of live instruments and electronic elements, the quartet conjures thumping energy and monotone melancholy, masterfully playing with the tension between these two extremes.

"Fosforinis Baseinas" translates to "Phosphorous Pool" in English. The band states: "The atmospheric, improvisational video for 'Fosforinis Baseinas' was created by Šarūnas Akelaitis, mixing performance and documentary film styles. The video experience ties in to the lyrics, questioning surrealistic apocalypse and lost desires. What's important today? How important are human relationships after all? The video looks best in the dark."

“Lithuania’s Solo Ansamblis make atmospheric synthpop that pulls from a variety of black-clad, early-’80s post-punk subgenres. There is a rigid, robotic quality to their music, but they mix their synthesizers and drum machines with traditional rock instrumentation, giving their sound a much more visceral, human impact. It’s an appealing sound; danceable, melodic, gritty, a little sleazy… and their use of their native tongue completes the vibe. While you can hear the past, Solo Ansamblis are forging their own path."
–BrooklynVegan

"Goth synths permeate post-punk rhythms and a classic sense of retro-futurism. It sounds like the idea of the future as viewed from the past... Some sort of enthralling death disco!"
–Under the Radar

"Post-punk surrealists [creating] a pulsing electronic music incantation."

PEPPY PEP PEPPER + New Noise Magazine

“'Timeless design stays with us,' the band says. 'Concepts can be reused and can stay relevant and modern regardless of where we are in time. This is an extension of the idea behind ‘Design For Living.’ The footage is taken from How a Watch Works (1949) which can be found in the pre-linger archive. It illustrates how retro design can still feel futuristic.'"

Granny Chic was released March 19thOrder the limited edition cassette, here.

Describes the artist, “the concept of album title ‘granny chic’ is a nod to the fact that many people who connect with the sounds of 80’s music, be it pop or underground, are quite possibly grandparents at this point.” Though the album mainly addresses, in abstract terms, the passing of time, Violet encourages her audience to add their own personal meaning when listening to the dreamy electro-soundscapes of Granny Chic.

Out today: NEW PRIMALS - Horse Girl Energy

New Primals' debut album Horse Girl Energy is out today via Learning Curve Records.

This Minneapolis trio bashes out wild-eyed noise-rock-dance-punk, for fans of the AmRep and Three One G catalogs.

Check out the band in action, live-streaming tonight alongside Gay Witch Abortion (Friday, 8pm ET on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube)!

"Explosive, energetic, vibrant, and yes – primal."
-Big Takeover Magazine

"Learning Curve Records has followed in the footsteps of AmRep, and they’ve built one of the most consistently reliable noise rock catalogs of the past decade. Which brings us to New Primals, an exciting new addition to the label, and a bright spot in modern DIY noise rock. Set to release 'Horse Girl Energy' on March 20th, their full length debut finds the Minneapolis trio equally freaked out and aggravated, as they grapple with identity, acceptance, and primal emotion..."
–Post-Trash

"While 'Horse Girl Energy' is a unique beast, you can draw some clear parallels from New Primals to post-hardcore and noise rock legends like Fugazi and The Jesus Lizard. There’s even some subtle influences from the ’90s mathcore/metallic hardcore scene in terms of how abrasive some of the band’s riffing gets; think bands like Cave In and Coalesce that ultimately adopted a more rock-oriented sound. Much of their songwriting pops with a certain glam rock and dance punk flair, thanks in large part to an impassioned and varied vocal performance from Sam Frederick. This will surely remain one of the standout albums for noise rock and post-hardcore this year, and I can’t recommend it highly enough."

Out today: PEPPY PEP PEPPER - Granny Chic

"Preferring anonymity to performing live, Peppy Pep Pepper can be considered a part of the European DIY synth/wave scene, as it offers cold and beautiful synth and drum machine constructions layered with minimalist vocals in the style of bands like The Normal, ADULT. or Void Vision."

PLANET B + BrooklynVegan

"Planet B, the punk/rap/industrial/everything project from Justin Pearson (The Locust, Retox, Dead Cross, etc) and producer Luke Henshaw, have put their unique twist on M.I.A.‘s modern classic 'Bad Girls.' The song is already an in-your-face stomper, but Planet B crank up the in-your-faceness to 11 and turn it into something that sounds more distorted and evil than you’d ever heard 'Bad Girls' sound."
- BrooklynVegan

Listen to the Planet B cover of M.I.A's "Bad Girls", along with a video by Displaced/Replaced, via BrooklynVegan, here.

Planet B offers an homage to the tuff attitude and revolutionary spirit of rapper/singer M.I.A. with a cover of her women-empowering anthem. With their signature sci fi distortion, Luke Henshaw wields his MPCs as sonic weapons as Justin Pearson takes on Matangi’s haughty swagger. The band’s abrasive and inventive take on hip hop backed by punk ethics aligns perfectly with an artist like M.I.A, making this cover completely logical even while hearing the slight absurdity of Pearson’s sung/screamed vocals from the perspective of a “bad girl.”

Video created by activist, glitch and photomontage artist Displaced/Replaced.

Planet B’s cover of M.I.A. track “Bad Girls” is available digitally via Three One G as well as all major streaming sites. Download the track, here for FREE via Bandcamp.

BINARY CODE - Memento Mori

BINARY CODE: third album "Memento Mori" finds catharsis after tragedy; sales to be donated to suicide prevention

Binary Code announces the May 15th release of its third full-length album: Memento Mori.

Memento Mori is an immersive experience that absolutely crushes. With cinematic atmosphere, metallic weight, and heart-wrenching sadness, Binary Code have created an album that commands attention from the first note to the last. Inspired entirely by the tragic death of Binary Code founder/guitarist Jesse Zuretti's girlfriend, Memento Mori is the full realization of this band's potential – channeling the members' formidable talents into music that pulls the listener through intense mourning, toward catharsis.

Zuretti states: "The album was written after my girlfriend at the time committed suicide. I found her hours after seeing her earlier that day. The album literally saved my life. I remember begging life for a sign or some guidance, and I woke up the next day and started writing music."

All sales of Memento Mori will be donated to suicide prevention.

Stream Binary Code's devastating cover of Mazzy Star's classic, "Fade Into You," from Memento Mori, here:
https://binarycodemusic.bandcamp.com/album/memento-mori-2

A standout of the New York/New Jersey metal scene in the early '10s, Binary Code established a rep for startling technicality and heavy groove. Over time the band's more progressive leanings moved to the forefront. This shift was documented on 2016's Moonsblood, which marked the debut of ace vocalist Oded Weinstock. Nasty tech-metal commingled with glistening post-metal, as Weinstock's growls and soaring clean vocals united the two extremes.

With Memento Mori, the sound has evolved into something even grander and more timeless: a massive, majestic version of heavy rock. Binary Code have graduated to a level where everything is done in service of the songs themselves. Every rhythmic and melodic detail is in place, working in unison to convey the emotional weight of the story.

"I think musical influences are hard to pinpoint because I wrote the music without influence beyond the experience," says Zuretti. "I think we've arrived at a place between Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Gojira, Devin Townsend, and composers like Hans Zimmer and Danny Elfman. But I didn't write with other people's music in mind. This was all from the heart."

Zuretti's mention of composers comes as no surprise – by day, he is a composer of music for Marvel Entertainment.

Memento Mori was recorded by Aaron Smith (7 Horns 7 Eyes), with drum tracking done at Backroom Studios in Rockaway NJ, and guitars and bass tracked at Zuretti's home studio. Vocals were tracked by John Douglass (The Contortionist, Death Angel). The band then worked with Smith at his studio in Seattle compose and record the orchestral synth arrangements.

"Those I Sought to Spare" features a guitar solo by Jeff Loomis (Arch Enemy, Nevermore).

The album was mastered by Alan Douches (Mastodon, Converge).

The album artwork was created by Eliran Kantor (Soulfly, Testament).

ÖTZI - Storm

ÖTZI: Artoffact Records to release sophomore album "Storm"
__________

"While dark punk has definitely gained in popularity in recent years, Ötzi set themselves apart... Their songs have unique, personal depth."
–Bandcamp Daily

"Emerging from Oakland’s vibrant punk and deathrock scenes... Catchy and will be stuck in your head all day – guaranteed. "

“With a traditional post-punk sound encased in aggression and darkness, Ötzi have perfected a modernized but timeless take on the genre.”
–Revolver

________

Artoffact Records announces the May 22nd release of Storm, the sophomore album by Ötzi.

Pre-order, here:

https://otzi.bandcamp.com/album/storm

From Oakland, California, Ötzi pierces the heart with their dark and passionate style of post-punk.

Bassist/vocalist Akiko Sampson states:

“We ascribe punk and feminist ethics to our music and our lives, and that’s something that will never change.

Ötzi first tore through the underground with their 2017 debut LP, Ghosts. For sophomore album Storm, Ötzi joins Artoffact Records, a label currently leading the pack of new bands taking post-punk aesthetics to higher places. Storm is a powerful and dynamic work that channels all the emotions of drastic transformation.

"We called the album Storm because, conceptually, the whole album is about withstanding violent change, whirlwind changes," explains Sampson. "It’s about undergoing necessary metamorphosis while remaining true to your core self."

With the addition of lush synth lines composed by Sampson, bright saxophone by latest member Winter Zora, and violin by Edrich, the album flows from the luxuriant and pensive self-reflection of “Moths” to a celebration of supportive love in “Hold Still”, to the hard-hitting resolve of "Tunnels" and “Ballad of Oiwa," expressing in each track all of the joys and pains of cathartic self-renewal.

Storm was recorded and mixed by Stan Wright at Buzz or Howl Studios in Portland, OR. The album was mastered by Daniel Husayn at North London Bomb Factory in London, UK. The cover art was created by Ashley Hohman.

Since their formation in 2014, Ötzi has toured the world, billing with varied post-punk, punk and indie luminaries including The Chameleons, Deerhoof, Modern English, She Past Away, Zounds, Screaming Dead and The Iconoclast.

"What matters to us is that our shows have a radical energy, that trans and queer people, people of color and women feel celebrated and safe in the short time we have together, and that through music we create a world where our audience feels honored and powerful themselves," says Sampson. Stand by for news of their next live shows.

Out today: SPECTRES - Nostalgia

SPECTRES' new album Nostalgia is out today on Artoffact Records.

Stream and buy, here:

More info, here:

"Vancouver’s SPECTRES have been around for nearly a decade, and they’ve helped spur an underground resurgence of dark, gothy old-school post-punk... Today, the band follows 2016’s Utopia with the new album Nostalgia, their fourth. It’s worth your time... SPECTRES' production is sharp and clean and cavernous. They bring glistening guitar lines and sinister, snaky bass and grand, echoing baritone hooks. If they’d come along in the early ’00s, I can imagine every big indie label just throwing money at them."
–Stereogum

"Ahead of the curve of the dark post-punk revival... Deathrock fare, like the arrow-sharp forward motion of 'Insurgence,' slots in neatly alongside dreamy pop like 'Fate'... Every move is perfectly executed, and yet the emotion behind it feels genuine."
–Bandcamp Daily

"A sound reminiscent of '80s stalwarts such as the Chameleons, Blancmange, Echo and the Bunnymen... A heady mix of harsh post-punk woven into a more melodic New Wave sound, a recipe for deep emotional upheaval."
–Post-Punk

"Top notch new wave that takes inspiration from early British anarcho-punk and adds dense layers of melody to create a sonic landscape with equal parts fury and melancholy."
–CVLT Nation

"Not just a pastiche of a bygone era... [SPECTRES] take the ingredients that make that music so memorable and instill it with their own forward looking ethos. The album should help the Vancouver based five piece to be placed among the top acts of the dark wave scene while also appealing to an audience that isn’t all leather jackets and motorcycle boots."

Founded in Vancouver in 2005 by vocalist Brian Gustavson, SPECTRES is commonly cited as one of the bands responsible for kicking off the renewed interest in the post-punk sound in Canada. Inspired initially by the original UK anarcho-punk bands of the late '70s and early '80s, SPECTRES mixes the ethics of that scene with the stylings of post-punk and an incredible knack for writing catchy songs in the tradition of classic bands like The Chameleons and Modern English.

Guitarist Zac Batalden of SPECTRES gives this statement: “This band has never been about trying to be in the right place at the right time. We basically started out of a pure interest in music and a desire to explore something creatively that basically none of our contemporaries were doing in the DIY punk scene at the time. We played for years on mismatched bills alongside crust, metal, and hardcore punk bands, booking our own shows, brokering our own deals with small scale labels, paying for everything out of our own pockets and working our way from sticking out like a sore thumb, to 15 years later being a respected band that in many ways helped jump start the interest in post punk music throughout the DIY music community and beyond. Throughout that time we've just tried to stay true to what we always set out to do in the first place: make music that is interesting to us, explore our own musical obsessions and connect with other like minded people through live music.”

SPECTRES finishes up a West Coast US tour this week:

Mar 12 – San Francisco, CA @ The Eagle
Mar 13 – Chico, CA @ Naked Lounge
Mar 14 – Portland, OR @ Lovecraft

SIK OHESO + V13

"The self-titled, ten-track, indie punk extravaganza is a collection of all of the best singles and EPs that the band has released in their short time together. What’s different this time around, though, is that the tracks have actually been mixed to their full potential, and received the treatment which proper releases are due. Many of the songs are deeply personal and provide an inner look into the mind of bandleader and founder Jon Yi."
- V13

Stream the band's self-titled debut, as well as get a free download of track "Suds", via V13, here.

Sik Oheso was founded in Brooklyn in early 2019 as a home recording solo project for Jon Yi. The band name is a combination of Korean and Japanese words (Jon is half Korean and half Japanese) and is a reference to navel gazing, as the first two songs written were extremely personal in nature. It began as a low-key solo project for director Yi to have something creative outside of filmmaking-- he has directed series work for HBO since 2009 and is alsois also a professor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts film school. With the goal of putting out at least one song a month in the year 2019, Jon wrote and recorded the songs and had friend Shawn Mehrens (Abi Yo Yos) perform vocals. Moving forward, Shawn began writing the lyrics to future songs while Jon continued to write the instrumentation. They enlisted guitarist  Lance Lee, from Nashville (who has played guitar for Del tha Funkee Homosapien) and Seve Sheldon of Public Eye in Portland to fill out the lineup. Still in its infancy, the band has opened for Jerry Paper, with their standout performance prompting a rival promoter in the audience that night to offer the Brooklyn-based band a headlining gig at the legendary venue Baby's All Right in January 2020.

Sik Oheso was recorded by band members, and mixed and Mastered by Zach Tuch (Touche Amore, Warm Thoughts). It will be released on limited silk-screened cover and randomly colored vinyl, as well as digitally, on March 27, 2020. Preorder, here.
