NYC label Sleeping Giant Glossolalia presents Calyx, the new collaborative EP from Steve Moore (Zombi) and Overcalc (Nick Skrobisz of Multicult).
Stream the track, "Time Crystals (Overcalc Remix)," and pre-order the EP, out July 28th on SGG, here: https://sleepinggiantglossolalia.bandcamp.com/album/steve-moore-overcalc-calyx
Moore, as a solo artist and as co-founder of the synth-heavy prog duo Zombi – along with his position in experimental hardcore/no-wave outfit Microwaves and collaborations with the likes of Goblin – is in the midst of a prolific career spanning soundtrack work, minimal techno, noise rock, Berlin School-style synth exploration, Italo and new age, with releases on a wide range of imprints including L.I.E.S., Kompakt, Death Waltz, and Relapse.
Skrobisz has spent the last decade fronting singular noise rock trio Multicult, recording several long players, splits and singles of propulsive, serpentine heaviness for labels like SGG and Reptilian; before that, he managed guitar and vocals for The Wayward.
On Calyx, the two come together in a way that highlights their distinct strengths on a path into previously unexplored terrain. Moore's tense, wistful landscapes evoke early '80s movie screens, scored by the likes of Vangelis and Tangerine Dream, while Skrobisz' discordant, euphoric guitar work owns its own space between punk and prog. The awesome clash of these two visionaries' styles introduces an unprecedented new sound.

Title track "Calyx" is a full-on collaboration between the two artists. Track 2, "Time Crystals," was composed and recorded entirely by Steve Moore. Track 3, "Fruits," was composed and recorded entirely by Overcalc. Tracks 4 and 5 are remixes of "Time Crystals" and "Fruits," with each artist reimagining the other's original work.
Skrobisz states: "Steve was posting a lot of remixes on Instagram during COVID, so I shot him a message, asking if he'd be interested in doing a remix. After a few more exchanges, it evolved into doing a collab record. We were coming up with stuff pretty quickly, so it wasn't much of a push to go ahead and make this thing into a solid 25 minute slab of wax. With Steve in upstate New York and myself in Baltimore, our process was creating and exchanging stems in an iterative fashion – each of us adding, removing, or elaborating on chosen elements of each new draft. The material starts to take a life of its own, doing things that way. My main motivation was to do my best to bring something novel and constructive to the table, as I've been a fan of Steve's work for many years. It was truly a wonderful surprise to get the chance to try the Overcalc formula with Steve's constructions. He's really honed his craft, to where his music is identifiable within moments of hearing it– a very difficult thing to do in purely electronic music. It's incredibly meditative and I can't speak highly enough of it."
Calyx is the newest gem in SGG's formidable catalog, alongside releases by Oxbow & Peter Brötzmann, Glenn Branca, and Shit and Shine, as well as various works from Moore's and Skrobisz's other projects.
