Calyx, the new collaboration between Steve Moore and Overcalc, is out today on Sleeping Giant Glossolalia.

Steve Moore is renowned as a solo artist and as co-founder of the synth-heavy prog duo Zombi, along with collaborations with the likes of Goblin. Overcalc is the solo project of Nick Skrobisz, frontman of singular noise rock trio Multicult.
Moore's electronic landscapes evoke films of the late '70s and early '80s, scored by the likes of Vangelis and Tangerine Dream, as well as minimal techno; Skrobisz' discordant, euphoric guitar work owns its own space between punk and prog. The awesome clash of these two visionaries' styles, witnessed for the first time on Calyx, introduces an unprecedented new sound.
Calyx is the newest gem in SGG's formidable catalog, alongside releases by Oxbow & Peter Brötzmann, Glenn Branca, and Shit and Shine, as well as various works from Moore's and Skrobisz's other projects.

Stream "In the Pool (Wetworld)," here: https://lambgoat.com/news/39689/something-is-waiting-collaborate-with-jon-hunt-of-dead-to-fall-on-in-the-pool-wetworld/
Sounding unlike any other band of today, Something Is Waiting exudes all the swagger of the latter-day hair metal saints and up-and-coming groove-metal goons who filled Riki Rachtman's cue cards in the earliest days of the '90s, yet seethes with enough vitriol to delight the nihilistic noise rock hordes who gathered to witness its set at this year's Caterwaul Festival. Six years deep, inspired as much by the early works of Ross Robinson as by the most caustic cuts from the AmRep catalog, the band is in a league of its own, the undisputed king of its own genre: "nu roll".
Of the new single, Lambgoat reports: "Flying off the rails like Metalocalypse's Dr. Rockzo on a bender, Something Is Waiting seem steeped in '80s rocker sleaze and swagger, and 'In the Pool (Wetworld)' is destined for MTV's primetime slots of the same anthemic era. That's where the anachronism ends though - the trio clearly have a knack for groove and pristine production that this millennium provides. Guitars crunch loudly, bass is bouncy, drums rollick and punch hard, and the vocals' serrated timbre tops the track off like a bandana across the forehead. Dead to Fall's Jon Hunt helps layer the vocals with his trademark snarl as well. The track's catchiness is its best asset, itself a callback to rock's former glory, but houses a new edge to clash and hold its own in the modern era."
Frontman Eddie Gobbo describes the track as "a summer song... it's a song about day drinking" and states: "Upon seeing Dead To Fall reunite, a band we've always loved, we thought 'Why not see if we can get Jon Hunt on the track?' He immediately said yes. He cut his vocals with me in the studio on a weekend when he flew in for a Chicago Bears game, which makes this extra special for me. What I love about this song is there's a real duet aspect. We're not just piling on and layering each other's vocals. We're dancing around each other. You don't hear that often. Alice Cooper's song with Chris Cornell, 'Stolen Prayer,' comes to mind."

Operating out of Djura Missionshus, their home studio in the deconsecrated church in rural Sweden where they live with their two children, Årabrot is the duo of vocalist/guitarist Kjetil Nernes and his wife, vocalist/keyboardist Karin Park.
With its origins going back 20 years now, Årabrot's list of achievements is long: collaborating with fellow innovators Stephen O'Malley and Lustmord; working with such producers as Steve Albini and Billy Anderson; winning a Norwegian Grammy. Nernes also has the distinction of being diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and making a full recovery.
With the early material traversing the roughest edges of The Birthday Party and Swans, and with inspiration taken from esoteric sources – "fin-de-siècle decadence, surrealism and even a pinch of old German philosophy to boot," in Nernes' words – each release has seen more and more risks taken.
In recent years, Årabrot's winding path has led toward absolute rock and roll perfection. In 2021, NPR's Lars Gotrich noted that the band was transforming "from AmRep bulldozer noise-rock into a cathedral-shaking rock-and-roll powerhouse" – and this transformation is fully realized now on the upcoming new album, Of Darkness and Light.
Of Darkness and Light bursts with infectious melodies and shines with the massive production of Alain Johannes (Mark Lanegan, PJ Harvey). With Johannes at the helm, Of Darkness and Light was recorded entirely at Djura Missionshus, a.k.a. The Church of Årabrot – the first album to be recorded entirely in the church.
Theatrical, bombastic, dancing on the line between the macabre and the comical, Of Darkness and Light is, among other things, a celebration of the hooks and swagger and almighty power of rock. The Birthday Party and Swans are still references, yes, but so are Queens of the Stone Age and Ghost. Fittingly, the album’s title references Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra, a philosophical text centered on transcending our own limitations.
Roadburn Festival's Becky Laverty writes: "Årabrot comes gloriously into their own in a live setting, with Kjetil holding court with liturgical flamboyance whilst Karin gives herself over to a hypnotic rhythm of their own making. The pair are most electrifying to witness when performing; their symbiotic devotion is palpable as they perform in the clothes they were married in. Rest assured, as long as there is breath in their bodies, this pair will be found preaching rock and roll under the neon-lit Årabrot cross."

SEVEN)SUNS x Ben Weinman
Classical music disruptors Seven)Suns have released a 29-minute video featuring founder/violinist Earl Maneein in conversation with The Dillinger Escape Plan's Ben Weinman, discussing Seven)Suns' upcoming new album – a note-for-note recreation of TDEP's landmark, One of Us Is the Killer.
The chat goes deep into every aspect of the ambitious project's origins and execution. Also at the table are Joseph Spiller, the album's producer, and Michael Kadnar, owner of Silent Pendulum Records, the Brooklyn-based label set to release it on September 29th.
Stream the video, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv0kZcv5lLQ
With 2023 marking the tenth anniversary of One of Us Is the Killer, Seven)Suns have reinterpreted the entire masterpiece, start to finish, as eleven new pieces, arranged for violin, viola, and cello. Upon the album's original release in 2013, Metal Hammer called it “the pinnacle of [The Dillinger Escape Plan's] career to date."
Seven)Suns founder Earl Maneein – a world-class violinist whose resumé includes performances with Jay-Z and Rihanna, and whom Metallica’s Robert Trujillo has stated to be “a kick ass player who pushes the creative boundaries” – describes his own group’s sound as “dystopian music rooted in the language of avant-metal and hardcore, played by a string quartet.” Based in New York City, the quartet consists of Maneein on violin, Adda Kridler on violin, Fung Chern Hwei on viola, and Jennifer DeVore on cello.
Seven)Suns has broken boundaries in both the metal and classical music worlds. While their core repertoire is original music written by Maneein, the group incorporates songs from metal and punk bands into its set list as well as Western composers such as Arvo Part and Hildegard Von Bingen.
Seven)Suns’ collaboration with The Dillinger Escape Plan can be traced back to 2015 when Maneein and his gang grabbed Weinman's attention with their cover of the band's odd-time mosh anthem, “43% Burnt.” Impressed, he invited Seven)Suns to perform on two songs on TDEP's final album, Dissociation, and he released their debut album, For The Hearts Still Beating, on his label, Party Smasher Inc.
Seven)Suns' other recent forays in the metal world include collabs with experimental black metal troupe Imperial Triumphant (on a track also featuring the talents of sax god Kenny G) and post-metal visionaries So Hideous.
The quartet plays live, August 2nd at New York's famed Joe's Pub. Buy tickets, here: https://publictheater.org/productions/joes-pub/2023/s/sevensuns/

With members in Austin and Oklahoma City, Neckbolt conjures a psychedelic strain of noise-rock – what Treble has accurately described as "the thunderous punch of Lightning Bolt with the squealing psychedelia of early Flaming Lips... a hallucinatory frenzy of fuzz and tension."
While the quintet was a standout at last year's ultimate noise rock event, No Coast Fest, alongside Metz and KEN mode, Neckbolt guitarist Benjamin Krause claims he is "uninterested in the masculine sound that can be associated with noise rock" and is instead "interested in exploring sounds associated with hypnagogic residue and full spectrums of emotion." Indeed, Neckbolt belongs on the freakiest fringes of the genre, amongst the likes of Boredoms, Arab on Radar, and Osees.
(dream dump) is the follow-up to 2021's debut, midwestern drawl. While that album was the brainchild of Roo and Krause, the new album is an equal collaboration between all five of Neckbolt's current members: Roo, Krause, guitarist Kilyn Massey, bassist Bill Indelicato, and drummer Brent Hodge. Krause states: "This record has been a complete collaborative process across a few states, in multiple studios, over several months. This is a collection of five points of view. We see this project as some amorphous entity. Neckbolt is not as 'finite' as most other bands, but rather an umbrella of understanding and free will."
He gives this glimpse into the recording process: "This album was written and recorded over the course of nine months, from the end of 2021 to mid-2022. Everyone in the group is some level of 'engineer,' so it was easy to track this wherever and whenever. The bulk of this record was recorded in living rooms and bedrooms and practice spaces when the ideas came up. We record something that we think is an idea and that ends up as the through line of the song. Every single song evolves in a way that is unexpected."
With its exuberant and unorthodox approach to caustic music, Neckbolt is right at home on Born Yesterday Records, the Chicago label owned by Greg Obis of Stuck and Kevin Fairbairn of Deeper, whose rosters boasts Lifeguard, among others. Chicago Reader calls the label, "a crucial voice in Chicago rock."

Hypnotic new single "Fung Wah or Lucky Star" skates on a line between euphoria and panic. Vocalist James Roo reveals that the song tells the true story of his first sleep paralysis incident, riding a bus from New York to Boston. With its murky, clanging momentum, the song paints that picture vividly; we are right there with Roo, on that bus, trapped in that dream. Though replete with corrosive tones that would make a young Steve Albini proud, the song pulses with a spirit of wonder, not brute force. Krause credits compilation album Pop Makossa: The Invasive Dance Beat of Cameroon 1976-1984 for inspiring the song's groove.
As the album title suggests, (dream dump) is rooted almost entirely in the realm of dreams. When asked about the meanings behind each song, Roo gives answers such as "it's a dream about a tree" and "it's a dream about trash and ghosts."

Sonically, the songs are as densely layered as the subconscious states they depict. Amidst peals of guitar, distorted bass, and driving rhythms, hidden treasures lie. Krause states: "There is a ton of 'ear candy' recorded with room mics or computer mics or phones. For example, we used a wooden pencil and the top of a scented candle as a placeholder for some of the auxiliary percussion on one song, to capture the rhythm that we would eventually track with real percussion. After a hundred rounds of sending this song back and forth, this 'wood block' sound ended up being ingrained in the song and we really didn’t want to mess with it. So that’s what you hear. This kind of stuff is all over the record."

The band's friend and collaborator Lustmord has written: "Born of the long dark winters of Norway, Årabrot was too black for metal and too avant-garde for punk, so it forged its own path... It is The Velvet Underground if Johnny Cash was a member and Nico was able to sing. It is Camus, Sartre, Poe and Burroughs, cut-up and regurgitated in an unholy erotic mass."
As Laverty puts it: "The last two decades have seen Årabrot shapeshift through multiple iterations; they’ve tried on different shapes and sizes, encompassed different moods and explored the outer reaches of various genres and yet never sounded less than entirely themselves."

STEVE MOORE & OVERCALC - Calyx
STEVE MOORE & OVERCALC: Zombi and Multicult members unite on "Calyx" EP, forge new paths in electronic music and noise rock
NYC label Sleeping Giant Glossolalia presents Calyx, the new collaborative EP from Steve Moore (Zombi) and Overcalc (Nick Skrobisz of Multicult).
Title track "Calyx" is a full-on collaboration between the two artists. Track 2, "Time Crystals," was composed and recorded entirely by Steve Moore. Track 3, "Fruits," was composed and recorded entirely by Overcalc. Tracks 4 and 5 are remixes of "Time Crystals" and "Fruits," with each artist reimagining the other's original work.
Skrobisz states: "Steve was posting a lot of remixes on Instagram during COVID, so I shot him a message, asking if he'd be interested in doing a remix. After a few more exchanges, it evolved into doing a collab record. We were coming up with stuff pretty quickly, so it wasn't much of a push to go ahead and make this thing into a solid 25 minute slab of wax. With Steve in upstate New York and myself in Baltimore, our process was creating and exchanging stems in an iterative fashion – each of us adding, removing, or elaborating on chosen elements of each new draft. The material starts to take a life of its own, doing things that way. My main motivation was to do my best to bring something novel and constructive to the table, as I've been a fan of Steve's work for many years. It was truly a wonderful surprise to get the chance to try the Overcalc formula with Steve's constructions. He's really honed his craft, to where his music is identifiable within moments of hearing it– a very difficult thing to do in purely electronic music. It's incredibly meditative and I can't speak highly enough of it."

Moore, as a solo artist and as co-founder of the synth-heavy prog duo Zombi – along with his position in experimental hardcore/no-wave outfit Microwaves and collaborations with the likes of Goblin – is in the midst of a prolific career spanning soundtrack work, minimal techno, noise rock, Berlin School-style synth exploration, Italo and new age, with releases on a wide range of imprints including L.I.E.S., Kompakt, Death Waltz, and Relapse.
Skrobisz has spent the last decade fronting singular noise rock trio Multicult, recording several long players, splits and singles of propulsive, serpentine heaviness for labels like SGG and Reptilian; before that, he managed guitar and vocals for The Wayward.
On Calyx, the two come together in a way that highlights their distinct strengths on a path into previously unexplored terrain. Moore's tense, wistful landscapes evoke early '80s movie screens, scored by the likes of Vangelis and Tangerine Dream, while Skrobisz' discordant, euphoric guitar work owns its own space between punk and prog. The awesome clash of these two visionaries' styles introduces an unprecedented new sound.

Calyx is the newest gem in SGG's formidable catalog, alongside releases by Oxbow & Peter Brötzmann, Glenn Branca, and Shit and Shine, as well as various works from Moore's and Skrobisz's other projects.

Out today: CEL DAMAGE - No Volume
Perched in California's High Desert – the region, north of LA, marked by towns like Apple Valley and Hesperia – Cel Damage has been creating music at a furious pace since its formation in 2014. New album No Volume is the band's 12th release in a decade.
Inspired by bands like Heavy Heavy Low Low, Cel Damage brings a mix of chaos, sass, and earth-splitting heaviness. Spastic Three One G-style forays are balanced by volcanic breakdowns of the most anthemic and crushing variety.

–Lambgoat
"Since forming back in 2014, California chaosbreeders Cel Damage have been creating music at a breakneck pace. As a continuation of the band’s love for making noise, embracing their flaws, and celebrating their weirdness, Cel Damage will deliver their new full-length, and 12th release in just under a decade, No Volume."
–New Noise
"Based in California's High Desert region comes Cel Damage, a heavy combination of scream meets post hardcore... Think chaotic but contained."
–Scene Point Blank
"A wild, unpredictable listen, with bits of grindcore, sass, screamo, noise, metalcore and even deathcore, all sent spinning around the listener’s head as the band run from one track to the next with breathless and bewildering momentum."
–Distorted Sound
"This is a challenging and intense offering from these High Desert freaks. There is a wonderful madness to their music, with its skronky performances, screamo influences and unrelenting wall of sound assault."

KEN mode - "He Was a Good Man, He Was a Taxpayer"
KEN mode channels "Bauhaus and Unsane" on chilling new single "He Was a Good Man, He Was a Taxpayer" from upcoming ninth album "VOID"
KEN mode has unveiled "He Was a Good Man, He Was a Taxpayer," the next new single from its upcoming album, VOID. VOID is set for a September 22nd release on Artoffact Records.
Stream the new song, here:
Bandcamp: https://kenmode.bandcamp.com/album/void
Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/album/11ytiC7J5KOK99Tp80uFGW
Released in September of last year, KEN mode's eighth album, NULL, was inspired by the bleakest days of the COVID-19 pandemic and saw the band create some of the rawest, harshest material of its career. The album also marked the official debut of KEN mode's newest member; multi-instrumentalist Kathryn Kerr joined the lineup of guitarist/vocalist Jesse Matthewson, his brother Shane Matthewson on drums, and bassist Skot Hamilton, and helped install a new palette of No Wave and industrial-tinged sounds into the band's trademark mix of metallic hardcore and noise rock.
Amongst other honors, NULL earned KEN mode the front cover of Decibel Magazine, wherein the music was described as "evocative, guttural, Howl-esque poetry laid over frantic, Godflesh-ian soundscapes." A review from Stereogum stated: "NULL is KEN mode at their peak as composers."
Arriving exactly one year after NULL, VOID is KEN mode's ninth full-length album. More than merely the follow-up to NULL, VOID is a companion to that album, inspired by the same events, and written and recorded within the same time frame.
Where NULL embodied the chaos and shock of the early days of the pandemic, VOID is the sound of disappointment and sorrow that followed.
On new single "He Was a Good Man, He Was a Taxpayer," a coiling bassline and austere drumbeat march forward slowly in 6/4 time as Matthewson lays his soul bare. "Now that I'm gone, you're free" he screams repeatedly in the song's final moments.
"Perhaps a little more post-punk than people are used to hearing us, but we had fun playing with synth and pushing the boundaries of the emotionality of this track," he states, reflecting on the new single. "Is this noise goth? I don't know. Does that sound stupid? Did I just invent a new genre? There are equal parts Bauhaus and Unsane on this, so maybe?"
Founded in 1999 by the Matthewson brothers, KEN mode has come to define the intensity and dedication inherent in its name – an acronym for "Kill Everyone Now," coined by Henry Rollins to describe Black Flag's approach to performance. Through its career, KEN mode has toured the world with the likes of Russian Circles, Deafheaven, and Full of Hell, and has worked with such producers as Steve Albini and Kurt Ballou.

SOMETHING IS WAITING - Absolutely
SOMETHING IS WAITING: Chicago mavericks create "nu roll" genre on new album "Absolutely"; groove-metal swagger meets noise rock vitriol; first single "House of Style" streaming now
Learning Curve Records announces the August 18th release of Absolutely, the new album by Something Is Waiting.
Stream the first single, "House of Style," and pre-order the album, here:https://somethingiswaiting.bandcamp.com/album/absolutely
But make no mistake: while the musical elements might seem simple and traceable, Something Is Waiting is not. Using a palette of sounds inspired by their aforementioned heroes, the band builds unusual songs that are as perplexing as they are headbangable.
And here is where it gets even more interesting: Gobbo is a wildly creative lyricist who conjures surreal scenarios with the euphoric wordplay of a Beat poet. His critiques, pointed at an array of targets, from the music industry to society at large, are thick with sarcasm and pop culture references. On "House of Style," he quotes a lyric from The Bangles' "Walk Like an Egyptian." On "In the Pool (Wetworld)," which features guest vocals by Dead to Fall's Jon Hunt, he spits the gem, "drunk like Sia with my hair in my face." The album's closer, "Poster Boys," is written from the point of view of a Hit Parader centerfold, hanging on a teenage girl’s wall.
Tracklist:
1) House of Style
2) The SIW Nu Roll Pinball Machine
3) Unholy Alliance
4) Lick the Spoon
5) In the Pool (Wetworld)
6) Get Your Gimmicks
7) Fulll Friction
8) Poster Boys

Eddie Gobbo - vocals
William Thomas Fay - guitar, bass
Idin Alexzander - drums
Guests:
Jon Hunt - vocals on "In the Pool (Wetworld)"

Stream the first single, "House of Style," and pre-order the album, here:
Four years since the release of its sophomore effort, Songs for the Sally Beauty Pavilion, Something Is Waiting returns with a brand new full-length. Absolutely is an unapologetic tour-de-force that sees this Chicago band dig its heels even deeper into the strange patch of dirt it owns – "the shrieky, sleazy, crust-glam you crave," as one review from Kerrang! describes it.
"House of Style," the new album's first single and opening track, sets the tone. Drummer Idin Alexzander pounds out a colossal backbeat with all the arena-hyping power of an upside-down Tommy Lee. Guitarist/bassist William Thomas Fay lays down the law with a bone-quaking, Page Hamilton/Wes Borland groove, before launching into a godly guitar solo that bursts with triumphant Steve Stevens histrionics. Cardigan-clad ringleader Eddie Gobbo has honed his Axl/Sebastian squawk to perfection – every word from his shredded throat rips the ears with pure contempt.
Formerly a five-piece, stripped down to a trio now, Something Is Waiting's three core members have stuck to their guns and mastered their craft. Gobbo and the boys' dedication to the likes of Pantera, White Zombie, and the early works of Ross Robinson, coupled with their enduring love of the most caustic cuts from the AmRep catalog, has paid off. Six years deep, the band is in a league of its own, the undisputed king of its own style of hard-charging "nu roll," which no one else within noise rock – or within any other strain of heavy music currently deemed "cool" – is even doing.

Revealing his thoughts behind "House of Style," he states: "That song is about being comfortable and confident in your own shoes, particularly from an artistic standpoint. That's a subconscious theme we've really carried with us in the band, from the jump. Being unapologetically you."
Indeed, Absolutely is the sound of a band being unapologetically... them. It is the sound of a band that has doubled down and committed to its own, odd vision. It is the sound of a new genre: "nu roll." It is, absolutely, Something Is Waiting.

NOTT - "Stasis" guitar playthrough
NOTT: Pacific Northwest doom-death duo drops "Stasis" guitar playthrough
With new track "Stasis" released last week, Pacific Northwest doom-death duo Nott has dropped a new playthrough video showing guitarist/vocalist Tyler Campbell conjuring the crushing song on his 8-string.
Stream the playthrough video, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJDK0S2VqV4
Pre-order Nott's upcoming new album, Hiraeth, out August 18th on Silent Pendulum Records, here: https://silentpendulumrecords.com/products/nott-hiraeth
Consisting of only two members – guitarist/vocalist Tyler Campbell and drummer Julia Geaman – Nott summons an all-smothering vortex of doom-death. With viscous tones, and with tempos ranging from mid-paced to glacial, Hiraeth unfolds like a slow-motion free fall into the abyss. Reference points include Immolation, Meshuggah, and Ulcerate.
A new review on No Clean Singing hails Campbell's guitar work as "riffs that sound like a boulder being dropped off a skyscraper" and offers this assessment of the new album: "Hiraeth is a staggering record, full of end-time imagery and angst. Each drum hit and guitar chord feels like an explosion, while the moments of quiet feel like gasping for breath beneath a pile of rubble. If this is the sound of the end of the world, then things are surely ending with a bang, not a whimper."
The album title is a Welsh word with no direct translation, but which Campbell defines as "the longing for what once was, and what you cannot go back to." The title takes on new weight, in light of Campbell's and Geaman's personal stories. The two migrated to their current homes in the Pacific Northwest, by way of Alaska and Romania, respectively.
