MISSOURI EXECUTIVE ORDER 44 - Salt Sermon

MISSOURI EXECUTIVE ORDER 44: "Mormon evangelists" use blistering hardcore to fight state tyranny on new album "Salt Sermon"; new music video streaming now

Learning Curve Records and The Ghost Is Clear Records present the release of Salt Sermon, the new album by Missouri Executive Order 44.

With a release date of August 16th, Salt Sermon will be available in four formats: digital, cassette, CD, and one-sided LP.

Stream the music video for the album's first single, "Wear Me Like a Mitt, Romney," here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igZSrH1Rmgg

Pre-order the album, here: https://lcrdistro.com/products/salt-sermons-lp-meo-44

Based in Kansas City, Missouri Executive Order 44 takes its name from a dark chapter of its state's history: in 1838, amidst tensions between Missouri residents and a burgeoning new Mormon population, Governor Lilburn Boggs issued an order stating, "The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the state if necessary for the public peace."

Clad in the bike helmets and white shirts that commonly signify LDS evangelists, the four members of MEO44 – vocalist Jarom Johnson, guitarist Elos Olsen, bassist Esau Fullmer, and drummer Malachi Hatch – use that specific historical moment as their rallying cry as they blast out blistering hardcore anthems in opposition to all forms of persecution. While a majority of bands in the scene take a stance against organized religion, the band flips the script and claims allegiance with the Saints of the 1830s, holding them up as victims of the state's tyranny.

Olsen states: "The struggle against fascist violent oppression of 'undesirables' is universal. We use a very fucked-up moment of hyper localized American history to relay that message for the fight against oppression. It’s a purely antiauthoritarian band. Don’t let anyone tell you who to love or who to worship."

Johnson concurs: “Missouri Executive Order 44 is a reminder that we, as decent human beings, need to stand together in communities and collectives to overthrow tyrannical authority and prevent the impending destruction of our autonomy by the bigoted forces of the state, police, and fascists. The story of our Mormon ascendants is cautionary but also too familiar to the experiences of our brothers and sisters. The state can and will oppress those it deems 'other' or 'less than' and our message is one of retribution, anti-colonialism, anti-state and pro-humanity."

Recorded and mixed by Matt Perrin and mastered by Will Killingsworth (Orchid, The Body), Salt Sermon clocks in at just fifteen minutes. From sasscore twang to blackened noisecore, the album drives forward darkly, relentlessly, with Johnson holding court like a manic preacher. Reference points might include Cursed, Coalesce, The Locust, and Heavy Heavy Low Low. Olsen calls it, simply, "Great Plains Hardcore... like the sporadic chaos of a herd of steer left to stampede across an empty prairie." Tying together the songs are ominous samples: distorted field recordings of sermons, Sunday school lessons, and excerpts from religious audiobooks.

Summing up Salt Sermon, Johnson gives this description: “This album is a series of stories and vignettes that lay clear a few simple ideas: every person deserves love, every person deserves autonomy, every person deserves a place to call home on this earth, and the radical acceptance of love is a powerful weapon against tyranny.”

Since forming less than two years ago, Missouri Executive Order 44 has played shows with The Callous Daoboys, Portrayal of Guilt, Heavenly Blue, Frail Body, Bib, Knoll, and dozens more. Salt Sermon follows the band's 2023 debut EP, Seventeen Dead in Caldwell County. While the band members bear striking resemblances to ex-members of bands such as the late, great Bummer, and have perhaps been spotted volunteering their time at thriving DIY venues like Farewell and Howdy on Kansas City's east side, Johnson, Olsen, Fullmer, and Hatch choose to commit fully to the MEO44 concept and not reveal any hard facts about their lives outside the project. The names might be aliases but the passion is real.

A 2023 article in local Kansas City paper The Pitch puts it like this: "Dressed in the iconic dark slacks and white shirts of door-to-door evangelists, the 'bike-helmet hardcore' band Missouri Executive Order 44 is taking a new look at Missouri’s history and identity... They never break character, but MEO44’s Mormon themes and appearance are more than just a schtick. Rather, the performance is a medium through which the group is able to share deeply held principles—beliefs that extend far beyond the boundaries of LDS church history and doctrine."

Out today: HABAK - Insania

Persistent Vision Records' reissue of Habak's debut album, Insania, is out today.

The band begins a tour of Europe tonight in Poland.

From Tijuana, Mexico, Habak exploded onto the DIY scene with what they describe as "crust melódico" – emotionally charged music that blazes a path through crust, screamo, and post-metal. Debut album Insania, originally released in 2015, captures the intensity of the band's early days, melding aggressive Tragedy-inspired d-beat with dark moments of melody that bring to mind contemporaries like Envy or Pageninetynine.

Sung in Spanish, vocalist Alejandra Valdez’s lyrics touch on themes of mental anguish, isolation, and hopelessness. Guitarist Juan Cintora states: "Many people see mental illness as something insignificant, when the reality is that no one is exempt and we have to understand that many times it is a side effect of the capitalist society in which we live."

Persistent Vision Records' reissue of Insania was remastered by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Frail Body) and includes a bonus live version of one song, “Orbe de Almas,” recorded in 2023 by Saetia/Off Minor member Steve Roche at his Philadelphia studio, Permanent Hearing Damage. Never before pressed on vinyl, Insania will be available in two color vinyl variants.

"Tijuana’s melodic crust powerhouse is and will be Habak. Nearly 10 years after their first record "Insania" came out, Habak is still killing it. Their intense sound melds aggression with melody, touching on hard-to-talk topics such as hopelessness and our society’s imminent decay."
–No Echo

"The debut album from Mexican crushers Habak, who combine punk, hardcore, and metal into a mauling seven-track package... Their energy and passion are impossible to dislike. A lot of time has passed since this band unleashed this record, and it sounds as vibrant and urgent as it did on that day."

Out today: BANGLADEAFY - Vulture

Vulture, the new album by Bangladeafy, is out today on Nefarious Industries.

VICE compared the NYC duo's early work to Lightning Bolt and The Melvins, but Bangladeafy's sixth album, Vulture, explores a synth-heavy strain of industrial-punk that teeters between euphoric hooks and apocalyptic anxiety. Reference points include Devo, Nine Inch Nails, The Locust, M.I.A., and Murderpact. Frontman Jon Ehlers describes the new sonic path as an inevitable return to roots: "My true passion has always been synthesizers."

Another layer to the story: Ehlers has lived with severe hearing loss since early childhood. He states: "I’ve certainly faced criticism, or murmurings that I might not have what it takes to hang with the big dogs, so to speak, because there’s a limit to what a hearing disabled musician might be able to do. If anything, I feel that I've proved myself and have worked harder to get there."

Stream the new album and buy it, here: https://www.nefariousindustries.com/nef114

Buy tickets for the band's Vulture record release show (June 26th at Brooklyn Made in Brooklyn, NY), here: https://brooklynmadepresents.com/event/bangladeafy-vulture-lp-release-show/

More info: https://thechainworld.blogspot.com/2024/04/bangladeafy-vulture.html

“[Bangladeafy] have backed up their wacky name with similarly skewed prog, noise, punk, and more since day one... ['Pastures'] rattles along like an angry screed of poetry with sparse, dislocated drums and some pretty radical synth stabs."
–Fecking Bahamas

“Bangladeafy continue to cross the beams of organic and electronic sound on new track ‘Prism.’ The brutal-prog duo’s synth-focused fourth album ‘Vulture’ lands June 21… Bangladeafy makes music that’s nearly as upfront as their moniker — a portmanteau referring to the Bangladeshi heritage of drummer Atif Haq and the hearing loss suffered by multi-instrumentalist Jon Ehlers.”
–Flood

"There is such a bevy of uniquely sounding tracks and inspired musical journeys on 'Vulture' that you’d never imagine it was the brainchild of two people. And that’s the allure of Bangladeafy. This record was meant to be listened to sequentially, and the patience pays off in dividends once everything is all said and done."
–Ghost Cult

"'Beautification' may be a guitar-less synth punk song, but the lack of guitars doesn’t weaken the punk aggression in this song one bit. The relentless rhythm drives the song home, and the synths are punchy and fast, like The Screamers meet Lightning Bolt."
–New Noise

"For anyone in the know and experienced in Bangladeafy’s previous five outings, it’s a given that any new endeavor will be loud, obtuse and jagged, and have unexpected hooks for days. For newcomers that are hungry for something different and, dare I say, visionary, their upcoming sixth effort, 'Vulture,' is exactly what the doctor ordered... A noisy-electronic-metalifabulous amalgamation, the likes that no one is doing or replicating."
–Nine Circles

"Jon Ehlers and Atif Haq have for more than a decade been blazing through the New York City underground as the post-industrial punk duo Bangladeafy. From the band’s new album comes the 'Pastures' single, which sees the pair continuing down the synthpunk path laid down by 2020’s 'Housefly,' exchanging the bass guitar for synthesizers to result in an explosive and noisy onslaught."
–ReGen

"Bangladeafy pick over the rotted carcass of synth-punk and pluck the tastiest morsels to vomit back into your gaping, bird-brained maw on their fierce and fearsome new album 'Vulture'..."
–Tinnitist

"New York noise rock duo Bangladeafy are back with their first new album in four years, an anxiety-ridden sprint through cacophonous bursts of sonic violence in the lineage of groups like Ruins and Lightning Bolt. On 'Vulture,' they continue to showcase the pronounced industrial influence of their past album, 'Housefly'... It’s abrasive, menacing, and awesome."
–Treble

"Bangladeafy are one of the weirdest, most creatively daring and interesting bands in the Brooklyn heavy music scene. With their new album 'Vulture' they seem to evolve more fully from their prog punk roots and into something far noisier, weirder and more powerful... It's a truly transcendent, weird and poetic offering that few other acts could ever emulate."
–Two Guys Metal Reviews

"Bangladeafy's a very cool band, very synth-driven, but still very experimental... Jon [Ehlers] has some similarities to Trent Reznor."
–Vinyl & Vision

SCRUNCHIES - Colossal

SCRUNCHIES: Minneapolis punks (ex-Kitten Forever) announce new album "Colossal" via Learning Curve Records; new single "The Empire" streaming now

Learning Curve Records presents the August 23rd release of Colossal, the third full-length album by Scrunchies.

Pre-order the album, here: https://lcrdistro.com/products/scrunchies-colossal-copy

Stream the album's first single, “The Empire,” here: https://youtu.be/LWOGjT-55ok

From Minneapolis, Minnesota, Scrunchies consists of guitarist/vocalist Laura Larson, bassist Jeremy Warden, and drummer/vocalist Danielle Cusack. Raw, raging and tuneful, the trio fires off infectious bursts of post-riot grrrl songcraft that land in the same garage as Mannequin Pussy, Screaming Females, and Sleater-Kinney.

A 2022 review from The A.V. Club hailed Scrunchies' knack for "packing riot grrrl punk, sneering garage rock, and pummeling post-punk grooves into a singular package without skimping on earworm hooks." On new album Colossal, the band fully delivers on that promise; first single "The Empire" rips forth, urgently, raggedly, while the intertwining vocals of Larson and Cusack soar irresistibly and demand repeated plays. In Larson's own words, the song is "
thrashy, poppy, and grunge-adjacent."

Grunge-adjacent indeed, Colossal was recorded by none other than Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, and features the very same Veleno guitar that was used in the recording of Nirvana's In Utero. Colossal is an "AAA" production – recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely with analog gear and tape.

"Working with Steve was amazing," recalls Larson, "not only because of the impact his work has had on us for the majority of our musical careers, but because from the minute we walked into the studio it was immediately a comfortable, honest experience. We trusted him and he trusted us. It meant the world to us to be able to do this project with him." One of the final works to be created by the revered Albini before his passing this year, the album was mastered by Greg Obis (Deeper, Dehd).

Colossal is a triumph, but a long road has led here; the members of Scrunchies have been entrenched in Minneapolis' thriving DIY scene for decades.
Notably, Larson was a member of Minneapolis punks Kitten Forever, whose feminist energy and bass-and-drums bashing earned tours with the likes of Screaming Females and made a fan out of queer icon JD Samson. The band's 16-year run came to a close during the making of Colossal and Larson states that the experience shaped the album: "It is as significant as a long term relationship ending and exploring that shift is a big part of the content."

The same feminism that fueled Kitten Forever now courses through Scrunchies, but Larson opts for surreal lyrics instead of overt messaging. ("The Empire" opens with these abstractly empowering lines: "There’s no chain on the apex / It’s science fiction / Pass the hours on ascending wire / If it clings to you it’s a parasite feeding at the empire."

"As with all of my projects, feminist themes run throughout the album," says Larson, "with an exploration of the insidiousness of modern gender expectations, power, bodies, and a slightly repulsive narrative of womanhood as deli meat made of the magician's assistant from a sawed-in-half trick... I write lyrics that veer more towards surrealistic and poetic imagery with the hope that they can resonate with people in different ways that are impactful to them."

With Kitten Forever and other past projects in the rearview, Scrunchies takes center stage.
Larson, Warden, and Cusack are fully committed and the mighty Colossal is the result. With a hometown Colossal release show booked for August 24th, the band will embark on a short US tour in September.

"Packing riot grrrl punk, sneering garage rock, and pummeling post-punk grooves into a singular package without skimping on earworm hooks is a rarer feat than is sometimes acknowledged—but it sounds like Scrunchies may have pulled it off."
–The AV Club

"With a riot grrrl sound like Spitboy or Bikini Kill, this Minneapolis group has earned their keep amongst the greats."
–Maximum Rocknroll

"One of the most exciting rock bands out there. They let their true selves shine with inventive uses of distortion and the loud-soft dynamic along with lyrics that merge the personal and political while retaining a surreal sense of fun."

BLIND GIRLS - "Loveless"

BLIND GIRLS: Australian screamo firebrands drop new single "Loveless," confront abusive relationships on new album "An Exit Exists"; US summer tour dates feature Saetia, Lagrimas, Frail Body, more

"Loveless,"
the new single by Blind Girls, is out today.

From the beaches of Gold Coast, Australia, Blind Girls deliver dark, chaotic, cathartic hardcore that goes for the throat. Exploring personal traumas through her lyrics, vocalist Sharni Brouwer's shrill, soulful screams are quite literally hair-raising. She states: "An Exit Exists was written during and after two separate instances dealing with abuse from those I loved. Each song is a reflection on the emotions and process I went through, from realization, feeling trapped, guilt, defeat, acceptance, and eventually finding a safe way out."

Musical reference points include screamo legends Pageninetynine, mathcore kings Botch, and newer bands such as Heavenly Blue with whom Blind Girls will be touring the US this summer.

"Loveless" appears on the quintet's new album, An Exit Exists, coming July 5th on Persistent Vision Records (with exclusive vinyl variants also available from Touché Amoré vocalist Jeremy Bolm's label, Secret Voice, and Australian label Life Lair Regret). The band's US tour kicks off the same day, featuring dates with Saetia, Lagrimas,
Frail Body, Quiet Fear, Raein, the aforementioned Heavenly Blue, and more.

Blind Girls have been working toward An Exit Exists for a decade now. The album follows two LPs (released on Zegema Beach Records), three EPs, and one split. The band has toured Australia with such bands as La Dispute and Militarie Gun, on top of numerous tours of the US, Canada, and Japan.

One factor distinguishing An Exit Exists from previous work is guitarist Luke Sweeney; the new album is the first to feature Sweeney as a full-fledged, contributing member from the very start of the writing process. "It has been exciting to release something that the five of us have worked on completely together," says bassist Mark Grant. "Luke has brought a freshness to the band with his guitar style and songwriting."

BLIND GIRLS - An Exit Exists

BLIND GIRLS: Australian screamo firebrands release new masterpiece "An Exit Exists" via Persistent Vision Records; US summer tour dates include Saetia, Heavenly Blue, more

Persistent Vision Records presents the release of An Exit Exists, the new album by Blind Girls.

An Exit Exists will be released digitally July 5th with vinyl and cassette formats to follow.

In addition to Persistent Vision Records' release, exclusive vinyl variants will be available from Touché Amoré vocalist Jeremy Bolm's label, Secret Voice, and Australian label Life Lair Regret.

Stream the album's first single, "Dissonance," here:

Pre-order the album, here:

From the beaches of Gold Coast, Australia, Blind Girls deliver a version of screamo that goes for the throat, ripping forth with crisis-level urgency. Where some bands in the genre get lost in meandering instrumentals or histrionic singing, Blind Girls stay focused and keep the momentum hurricane-strong.
Rarely crossing the 2-minute mark, their songs are designed for maximum impact; they dispatch their chaotic, cathartic hardcore in short bursts.

At the forefront is vocalist Sharni Brouwer. Exploring personal traumas through her lyrics, Brouwer's shrill, soulful screams are quite literally hair-raising. She states: "An Exit Exists was written during and after two separate instances dealing with abuse from those I loved. Each song is a reflection on the emotions and process I went through, from realization, feeling trapped, guilt, defeat, acceptance, and eventually finding a safe way out."

Concise and intentional as they are, Blind Girls' songs are by no means one-dimensional. Contained within the twelve tracks on An Exit Exists are rollercoasters of sound and feeling, from vicious breakdowns to melodic lulls. The interweaving strings of guitarists Julian Currie and Luke Sweeney and bassist Mark Grant build towering waves of tension, whilst drummer Ben Smith blasts out highly frenetic beats. Recorded by Brock Weston and mixed and mastered by Rollie Ulug, the production is rich and clear throughout.

Describing the new album, bassist Mark Grant states: "It’s our best yet. It's the Blind Girls sound, but expanded and pushed. This new album has some of our most abrasive songs and some of our most melodic songs.Broadly speaking, reference points include screamo legends Pageninetynine, mathcore kings Botch, and newer bands such as Heavenly Blue with whom Blind Girls will be touring the US this summer.

One factor distinguishing An Exit Exists from previous work is guitarist Luke Sweeney; the new album is the first to feature Sweeney as a full-fledged, contributing member from the very start of the writing process. "It has been exciting to release something that the five of us have worked on completely together," says Grant. "Luke has brought a freshness to the band with his guitar style and songwriting. I am really proud of how Julian and Luke’s guitars play together on this record."

"We’ve played with metal bands, shoegaze bands, we've played on hardcore fests, noise shows, a rap show with Lil Ugly Mane," declares Grant. "We still play small DIY spaces to 50 or 100 people but recently have played 1,000-2,000 cap venues. All that matters is, if the crowd has energy then it feels right."

US crowds will have ample opportunities to bring their energy to Blind Girls shows this summer. In addition to the upcoming dates with Heavenly Blue, the US tour sees the quintet share stages with a slew of other stellar bands, including Frail Body, Lagrimas, Quiet Fear, Raein, Saetia, and more.

BANGLADEAFY - "Prism"

BANGLADEAFY: NYC synth-punks "cross the beams of organic and electronic sound" on euphoric new single "Prism"

“Prism,” the euphoric new single from Bangladeafy, is streaming now. The track appears on the NYC duo’s upcoming new album Vulture, out June 21st on Nefarious Industries.

Stream "Prism", here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USUDbqIJuQE

Pre-order the album, here: https://www.nefariousindustries.com/nef114

Flood Magazine reports: “Bangladeafy continue to cross the beams of organic and electronic sound on new track ‘Prism.’ The brutal-prog duo’s synth-focused fourth album ‘Vulture’ lands June 21st… Bangladeafy makes music that’s nearly as upfront as their moniker — a portmanteau referring to the Bangladeshi heritage of drummer Atif Haq and the hearing loss suffered by multi-instrumentalist Jon Ehlers.”

After wowing the underground for years with its prog-punk shredding (what one VICE writer described as “Lightning Bolt and The Melvins eating big, greedy spoonfuls of each other’s candy-colored vomit”), Bangladeafy replaced bass guitar with synths and began moving toward its next form. Ehlers states: "Vulture is the sound of Bangladeafy settling into our purest form... My true passion has always been synthesizers."

On Vulture, Jon Ehlers and Atif Haq mash chaotic rhythms, euphoric hooks, and plenty of existential horror into songs that teeter between panic and ecstasy. Reference points include Devo, The Locust, and M.I.A.

Speaking on his hearing disability, Ehlers states: "I’ve certainly faced criticism, or murmurings that I might not have what it takes to hang with the big dogs, so to speak, because there’s a limit to what a hearing disabled musician might be able to do. If anything, I feel that I've proved myself and have worked harder to get there."

The official Vulture album release show is scheduled for June 26th at Brooklyn Made in Brooklyn, NY.
