WINGTIPS - Cutting Room Floor

WINGTIPS: Chicago duo spreads its pop wings on infectious sophomore album "Cutting Room Floor"; new track streaming; North American tour booked

Artoffact Records presents the September 3rd release of Cutting Room Floor, the sophomore album by Chicago duo Wingtips.

Stream first single "Cross the Line," here:

With their debut album, Exposure Therapy, released in 2019 on Artoffact, Wingtips' Vincent Segretario and Hannah Avalon stormed the scene with dark, infectious pop, drawing equally from slamming darkwave and lush synth-pop.

Revolver Magazine called the pair a "devastating twosome" and Chicago Reader offered these words: "Goth-pop duo Wingtips captures the irresistible disintegration and woozy depths of The Cure's late-'80s sound."

Sophomore album Cutting Room Floor maintains a base in '80s sounds, but sees the band ascend to a new place of pure, timeless songcraft. With brighter melodies, deeper emotions, and a stripped-down approach that lets the songs shine, Wingtips have become something bigger than a retro act. With hooks so compelling they are cinematic in scope, and vocals that grab hold of the heart, Cutting Room Floor marks the genesis of a new style: "new romantic for post-millennial end times," in the band's own words.

"We always sought to go for the neck with maximalist production, with layers upon layers of sonic output," says Segretario. "This time, we deliberately deconstructed our sound and tried simplifying things altogether."

"Writing 'Cutting Room Floor' was a much different experience than with our previous work," he continues. "We aimed to find inspiration in modern music because we wanted to write a modern-sounding record. In the past we certainly drew inspiration from '80s artists, and still do at our core, but this time we wanted to jump out of that mold. I think if anything, that’s how we’ve matured; simply doing more of what we want as artists and staying true to ourselves in the present moment."

The result is music that respects the past without being restrained by it. With utmost respect to the icons of yore, from Depeche Mode to Nine Inch Nails, Wingtips have graduated to a new place amidst contemporaries who are freely pushing forward into new realms – artists such as CHVRCHES, The Soft Moon, HEALTH, and FKA twigs.

Consistent with the musical shift of the new album, Segretario and Avalon's lyrics address the idea of personal growth. "In cinema, the 'cutting room floor' is essentially the stage where they decide which footage stays, and which footage gets canned," says Segretario. "Many of the album’s themes are rooted in this idea of editing your own life to become the best version of yourself. We wanted to talk about how progress in life isn’t linear, and we sometimes have to go through trial and error to find ourselves on the other end. We realize who we are in times of crisis, and let the lessons we learn define our character as a result."

Cutting Room Floor was recorded at Union Street Arts in Marion, Illinois; mixed by Brian Fox at Altered States Studio in Chicago; and mastered by Jason Corbett at Jacknife Studios in Vancouver, BC.

The cover art was created by Albie Mason.

The band will tour North America extensively in 2021 and 2022.

SATANIC PLANET + Fangoria

“'Devil In Me' is Satanic Planet’s new music video/short film depicting a gut-wrenching exorcism somewhere in rural America, but watch through to the end to see that things are seldom what they seem."
- Fangoria

Watch the video for "Devil in Me," directed by Lola Blanc, on Fangoria, here.

SATANIC PLANET is the creation of Lucien Greaves (The Satanic Temple co-founder and spokesperson), Luke Henshaw (Planet B, Sonido de la Frontera), Dave Lombardo (Slayer, The Misfits, Mr. Bungle, Suicidal Tendencies, Dead Cross), and Justin Pearson (The Locust, Dead Cross, Swing Kids, Deaf Club). With the birth of Satanic Planet, hip-hop producer Henshaw and punk provocateur Pearson joined co-founder and spokesperson of The Satanic Temple, Lucien Greaves-- the most prominent and outspoken contemporary Satanist in the world. Greaves has gained international attention as an advocate for religious liberty and the voice of the Satanic Reformation, delivering lectures nationwide and featured in national media outlets including  MSNBC, NPR, Huffington Post Live, CNN, Harper’s Monthly, Newsweek, Fox News, Vice, Salon, Rolling Stone, and many more. As the trio were diligently working, and nearly completed with, the music for their debut album, the worldwide pandemic hit, seemingly bringing things to a halt. However, with the onset of this new way of living, the newly-formed band was in a unique position to enlist the legendary Dave Lombardo, who found himself not touring for the first time in years, and suddenly having more time to work in his home studio on projects that interested him. With the addition of this iconic drummer, Satanic Planet was complete. Along the way, an eclectic range of guest appearances arise, including Cattle Decapitation’s Travis Ryan, Nomi Abadi, Silent’s Jung Sing, Shiva Honey, Eric Livingston (also known as his artist moniker, First Church of the Void), and Hexa’s Carrie Feller. This collaboration embraces the avant garde to create sci-fi sermons that range from doom and industrial to evil exotica.

“Devil in Me” features guest vocalist/Grammy-nominated pianist Nomi Abadi and is a single off the band's self-titled album. Satanic Planet was released by Three One G Records digitally, as well as on CD and vinyl, with four limited edition vinyl variants on May 28th. Order, here.

SILENT + Post-Punk

"Silent is anything but in their blistering new track, Empty Spaces. An anthem railing against injustice and oppression, the powerful lyrics are accompanied by anguished guitar and frenetic distortion."
— Post-Punk.com

Watch the "electric, primal video" for track Empty Spaces, via Post-Punk.com, here:

Silent was founded in Mexicali, Baja California in 2015 by Jung Sing and Alex Lara. The band released their first LP, “A Century of Abuse”, on Three One G Records the following year.  Since, they have only released a cover of The Cure’s “Prayers for Rain”, making this long-awaited upcoming sophomore LP their first full-length in five years. Silent has toured both the USA and Mexico, alongside bands like Dead Cross, Retox, Algiers, He Whose Ox is Gored, Author & Punisher, and The Locust. Silent’s music takes on various aural approaches, flowing between hypnotic, gothic and darkwave influence, as well as more fast-paced punk and post-punk, at times even crossing into the realm of catchy, surf-like riffs. Though Rocio chevez’s drumming, Rodo Ibarra’s (Maniqui Lazer) bass, and Alex Lara’s guitar lines vary depending on the track, Jung Sing’s (Maniqui Lazer, All Leather) vocals are a common thread throughout, consistently emitting honeyed grief: soothing but woeful, desperate and yet in no rush, perhaps calling to mind something in the spirit of a Mexicali-reincarnated Nick Cave.

“Empty Spaces” is a single off the band’s newest LP, MODERN HATE. This album was released April 23rd through Three One G Records on two different vinyl variants, grey and clear/black splatter. Order it, here.

“Empty Spaces” was directed and edited by Mario Acosta, with production by Pentacostal. Performances by Alma Nayeli Martínez Pérez, Gloria Gisel Cueto Dueñas.

Out today: ARELSEUM - Arelseum III

Arelseum III, the new album by Arelseum, is out today on Sleeping Giant Glosslolalia.

Stream and buy, here:
https://sleepinggiantglossolalia.bandcamp.com/album/arelseum-iii

Arelseum is the new project of Colin Marston (Krallice, Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, etc.) and Ryan Lipynsky (Unearthly Trance, The Howling Wind, Reeking Aura, etc.) NYC metal lifers Marston and Lipynsky have spent the past two decades prowling the extreme and experimental depths of the genre. Arelseum III sees these two combine their talents in an entirely new way — cinematic synth-scapes, for fans of '70s sci-fi epics, '80s slasher flicks, and dungeon synth. Mixed and mastered by Marston at Menegroth The Thousand Caves (Agalloch, Liturgy, Kelly Moran). In addition to today’s digital release, Sleeping Giant Glossolalia will release the album on cassette as part of a trilogy of cassettes: Arelseum, Arelseum II, Arelseum III.

UNDER ATTACK + BrooklynVegan

Today, ripping hardcore band UNDER ATTACK premiere the video for “Die Already,” off of their newly announced upcoming EP, “Preservation’s Crash.”

Watch the video, created by Displaced/Replaced, via BrooklynVegan, here:
https://www.brooklynvegan.com/under-attack-municipal-waste-suppression-etc-prep-new-ep-for-three-one-g-new-video/

UNDER ATTACK is a band focused on “vicious precision hardcore” made up of vocalist Alex Cope, guitarist Mark Telfian, bassist/vocalist Jason Hodges (Suppression, Oozing Meat), and drummer Dave Witte (Municipal Waste). Collectively, the band has an extensive “ex members of” list including Limp Wrist, Discordance Axis, Human Remains, Hail Mary, Eucharist, and many, many more. The band began a few years back, when Dave Witte and Mark Telfian connected at a party in Richmond, VA. After many meetings at Dave's food truck, Go Go Vegan Go, they talked about forming a brutal hardcore band with no gimmicks, in the spirit of predecessors like Negative Approach, Straight Ahead, and, in general, old school 80s punk and hardcore. After figuring out two other old friends to bring into the mix, the band started practicing nonstop in February of 2019. By March, they recorded a 5 song demo released in the US on Vinyl Conflict and in Europe on AutoReverse. In August of 2019, their first 7” came out on Iron Lung Records called “Through the Blade.” In February of 2021, they had a split 7” with the Dutch hardcore legends Seein Red on Autoreverse and Way Back When Records, as well as another split 7” in the works with Loose Nukes on Mutant Sound Records and a split 12” with Fright on Gloom records. Needless to say, the band is relentless in both musical approach and work ethic.

“Die Already” is a single off of "Preservation’s Crash," the band’s upcoming EP. It will be available digitally as well as on limited edition vinyl, via Three One G, August 27th. Preorder, here.

FILTH IS ETERNAL + BrooklynVegan

"'On The Rake' is an 89-second, whiplash-inducing hardcore ripper that sounds built to turn a packed venue into a sea of moving bodies."
– BrooklynVegan

Learn more about the band's upcoming LP, Love is a Lie, Filth is Eternal, and watch the video for single "On the Rake," via BrooklynVegan, here:

Despite the name, Seattle’s formerly titled F*cked and Bound (now FILTH IS ETERNAL) always felt fundamentally untethered, a wild thing. Comprised of vocalist Lisa Mungo (He Whose Ox is Gored, former touring member of Daughters), guitarist Brian McClelland (He Whose Ox is Gored), bassist Rah Davis (Skelator, Cages, former touring member of Cattle Decapitation), and drummer Mathew Chandler (Reburied), the band achieved an air of unhinged freedom mainly by thrashing their way through unassuming, beloved punk venues, writhing across unwashed floors and DIY spaces, hosting their own sort of hardcore communal exorcisms. They’ve toured with Haunted Horses and Languish, and shared the stage with varied acts such as Amigo The Devil, Cult Leader, Goatwhore, Graves At Sea, Infernal Coil, Marissa Nadler, Wolves In The Throne Room, and YOB. Accelerated by isolation, a rechristening in 2021 seemed fitting to more accurately celebrate their divine vulgarity: FILTH IS ETERNAL. With it comes their second LP, Love is a Lie, Filth is Eternal,  a follow up to their debut, Suffrage.

“On the Rake” is a single off of the band’s upcoming album, Love is a Lie, Filth is Eternal, which will be released on Quiet Panic (USA)/Church Road (UK/EU) August 27th, 2021. It will be available on three different vinyl variants, including black with white splatter, transparent magenta in clear with yellow splatter, and transparent orange. Preorder, here. | Spotify

KNOW//SUFFER - The Great Dying

KNOW//SUFFER: El Paso hardcore crew to release new EP "The Great Dying" via Silent Pendulum Records; new track streaming

Silent Pendulum Records announces the July 30th release of The Great Dying, the new EP by Know//Suffer.

Pre-order the EP and stream first single "Thumbnail," here:

From El Paso, Texas, Know//Suffer wields a dark strain of
death metal-infused hardcore, thick with shifty rhythms, nasty pick scrapes, and double-bass flurries. At the helm, frontman Toast Williams bucks all expectations of the genre with a vocal approach that is earnest and yearning and rife with poetic lyrics navigating personal and political struggles; in a sea of vocalists aspiring to inhuman levels of toughness, Toast steers the other way, back toward humanity.

Know//Suffer's mix of these two opposing elements – mosh pit terror meets heart-on-sleeve vulnerability – sets the band apart from the hordes. It is as if the brute force of Code Orange and the emotional depth of Burn were united under one Texan roof.

"Flip a coin until the thumbnail is rubbed away / Telling myself there is more to life than these heads or tails outcomes / Said, meditate to find inner peace / Pace a perfect circle as blood and pain leave / Learning and ignoring the agony of an empty bed," Williams bellows on "Thumbnail."

"We’ve never strived to sound like anyone else and we don’t really compare our music to any other band," says guitarist Jerry Griffin. Rather than admitting any musical influences at all, the K//S crew claim to find all their inspiration through daily life in their hometown. "Black Power and Brown Pride came together at a critical moment to make this band," states Williams. "El Paso is a melting pot. Anything can happen. When chaos knocks on your door you can either embrace it or run from it."

Written and recorded entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic, The Great Dying is Know//Suffer's best work to date. The EP was recorded mixed and mastered by Hector Meza at XBCX Recordings. The cover art was created by Taylor Bates, whose work has adorned albums by Black Sheep Wall and The Number Twelve Looks Like You.

Silent Pendulum Records boss Mike Kadnar states: "I met the gentlemen in Know//Suffer about 3-4 years ago while on tour with The Number 12 Looks Like You. We kept in touch after the tour and then next time we rolled through El Paso, Know//Suffer opened for us and blew me away. It's a pleasure to be able to release their album now and I can't wait to see what the future holds for this young and unique band."

Tracklist:
1) Godplay
2) Thumbnail
3) Scarecrow
4) Vertigo
5) Balances
6) The Great Dying

Lineup:
Toast Williams - vocals
Eric Vasquez - guitar
Jerry Griffin - guitar

Out today: URWELT - Distant Galaxies Collide

The debut album by Urwelt is out today on Sleeping Giant Glossolalia.

Stream and buy, here: https://sleepinggiantglossolalia.bandcamp.com/album/urwelt-distant-galaxies-collide

Urwelt is the new project from UK artists Anthony Di Franco and Kevin Laska, who collaborated 20 years ago under the name Novatron.

Di Franco is a member of legendary psych-noise squad Ramleh and the man behind such projects as JFK; Laska was Godflesh's live sound engineer for a decade, among other things.

Urwelt's combination of squelching noise and rapturous drone could be likened to a mix of Merzbow and Sunn 0))). Urwelt's soundscapes bring to mind the incomprehensible expanse of outer space; Di Franco states: "Our work has always been rooted in speculative imaginings of the universe's origins and the primordial forces that formed us."

"[Di Franco is] one of the genre’s most enduring artists."
–Michael Berdan, Uniform

"As I listen to their sonic clouds of dirge I find myself drifting off into a state of nothingness. This project is really powerful in a sinister sort of way. Urwelt’s songs will seep into your mind and find spaces to dwell that you didn’t know existed!"
–CVLT Nation
