STAGHORN + New Noise Magazine

Staghorn
"When we leave the confines of our little utopia, we see so much conflict and people living far from the earth and the harmony that can be achieved with a little bit of conscious effort. We are not hippies, and definitely not here to shame anyone for the way they are living. We simply aim to educate and pose an alternative to the status quo. We chose to set our music video in the forest as this is a place we take sanctuary almost every day for our minds, for exercise, for communion with the earth. We wanted to convey the connection that we feel is missing from the population at large."
-Staghorn, discussing their latest video with New Noise Magazine

Watch the enchanting video for “Wormwood III”, via New Noise Magazine, here.

Equally heavy in concept and musicality, Staghorn's art is meant to create a soundtrack to a better world by highlighting that which is both bleak and hopeful along the way. Strongly principled as a do-it-yourself collective which operates Leave Your Mark Print Shop and Mills Custom Amps, the band uses their trades, creativity and compassion to affect a working, sustainable future: they create their own amps and cabs, print all of their own merch, and have records pressed that are predominantly made of recycled materials. In short, activism is the driving force behind every element of Staghorn’s art.

Wormwood III will be released as a one-sided, etched 12" EP pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Limited to 500 copies (300 on Coke bottle clear with brown smoke, 200 random color variant- a Shuga Exclusive) in partnership with Shuga Records in Chicago. This limited first edition release will be screen printed by hand on recycled paper.

THE MANX + New Noise Magazine

The Manx
“The bubbly, cartoony and croony accordion led “Back In The Trash” gets a demented makeover with Jeremy Kerners, “Black In The Trash (304 Angstroms Remix)”. Kerner might best be known for his finger gymnastics as the guitarist in LA’s psycho jazz-core group Feather Wolf, but his musical prowess knows no bounds as it extends into mad scientist territory with this windy and demonic re-interpretation of a Manx classic.”
-New Noise Magazine

Stream the track, “Black in the Trash (304 Angstroms Remix)”, via New Noise Magazine, here.

Mystery Skum and The Odyssey of Goo is a collection of previously unreleased tracks, remixes, reinterpretations, guest spots, and noise experiments, created as a companion to avant-garde punk act The Manx’s last LP, Voyage in Bad Taste. Guest features include Justin Roiland of Rick and Morty, Buzz Osborne (The Melvins), Ryan Kattner (Man Man, Honus Honus), JR Slayer aka Cody Votolato (Blood Brothers, Head Wound City), as well as many other respected artists. Lyrically, the band likes to make things “gooey and vibrant,” and the same can be said of their live performances (think sparkly hot pants and slime- lots of slime). Topics range from being eaten by huge moth larvae, to the mundaneness of office life, to the pitfalls and hypocrisies of organized religion, to the feelings one might experience if their entombed and mummified grandmother came back to life after having been dead for 5,000 years. It’s all very visual, cryptic, and fun, which aligns perfectly when considering the fact that the majority of the band members work or have worked for projects such as Rick and Morty, Uncle Grandpa, Eric Andre, and Robot Chicken (as only a small sampling of their extremely impressive collective creative resumes).

Mystery Skum and The Odyssey of Goo will be released on limited edition slime green cassette (limited to 200) as well as digitally. Preorder link here.

Upcoming shows: July 18 - Los Angeles, CA @ Hi Hat w/ Honus Honus, Tight Fright July 19 - Long Beach, CA @ Toxic Toast Theatre w/ Froggy Fresh July 20 - Tucson, AZ @ Cans Deli w/ Mr. Free and the Satellite Freakout July 21 - Tucson, AZ @ Che's Lounge July 28 - Tijuana, MX @ YouRevolution

Out today: POUND

The debut album by Pound is out today on Silent Pendulum Records.

Listen and buy, here:
https://silentpendulumrecords.bandcamp.com/album/pound
https://pound.bandcamp.com

Pound – the Seattle-based duo of Ryan Schutte and David Stickney – conjures jaw-dropping chaos and groove, via a unique setup consisting of a baritone 9-string guitar and two drum kits played as one.

On its self-titled debut album, Pound takes influence from across the spectrum of grind and doom, from Nasum to Sleep, then chops up these influences and delivers its own brand of hyper-shred-math that twists and turns relentlessly. Striking a balance between head-scratching technical prowess and visceral caveman satisfaction, Pound is a singular new voice in instrumental music. The album was mixed and mastered by Dave Otero (Primitive Man, Cattle Decapitation).

"Instrumental grind duo Pound play a super groovy, mathy form of the genre... The mathy chaos shares as many similarities with The Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah as it does with other grindcore bands."
–Decibel

"Hypnotic grind-duo Pound... with their catchy melodic grooves and truly unique approach to music making... a mix of controlled chaos and ambient charm."

–Metal Injection

"Trebly grind assaults, math-metal labyrynthian guitar lines, and massive groovy passages."
–Echoes and Dust

"The Seattle duo Pound have turned in some of the most electrifying live performances I've seen here in the Pacific Northwest. The sights and sounds of guitarist Ryan Schutte delivering a tornado of chaos and groove on a baritone 9-string guitar while David Stickney switches back and forth between two drum kits in riveting displays of percussive vulcanism, is the kind of mind-blowing experience I don't think I'll ever get tired of."
–No Clean Singing

"For a band that consists solely of two members that play a nine-string guitar and dual drum kits respectively, Seattle's Pound make one hell of a sweet racket."
–Nine Circles

Out today: DEL JUDAS - Deity

Del Judas' debut album Deity is out today on Primal Architecture.

Listen and buy, here:
https://deljudasprml.bandcamp.com/

"Metal drummer goes solo, shocks everyone with a flawless, fully-realized, cowboy-goth alter-ego" is the headline here. Del Judas is the new solo incarnation of Brooklyn musician Charlie Schmid, known for his work as drummer of bands like Tombs and Vaura. Stepping out from behind the kit for the first time, Schmid brings a lifetime's worth of passion to these stellar songs – a dark, romantic, sinister sound that resides at the moonlit crossroads of country and post-punk, tipping the hat to Johnny Cash, Chris Isaak, Peter Murphy, and the films of David Lynch. Deity is a wondrous example of a metal musician successfully branching out to other genres and, context aside, the album stands on its own as an intensely atmospheric and memorable debut.

"This record is about the eternal interplay between the sex drive and the death drive, " says Schmid. "It’s about killing yourself, figuratively and literally. It’s about parts of yourself dying off as you go through different romantic relationships in your life and the rebirth that happens through both sensual pleasure and psychic growth."

The vocals and instruments on Deity were recorded entirely by Schmid in his apartment in Brooklyn. The album was mixed by Evan McCulloch and mastered by Colin Marston (Jarboe, Sannhet, Kayo Dot).

"The soundtrack to a lonely drive out west, as the sun is pulled down by the fingertips of ghosts hitchhiking their way across the sprawling interstate... Lovingly giving nod to crooning melodies of Johnny Cash, Chris Isaak, Peter Murphy, with aural and aesthetic traces of the The Fields of the Nephilim."
–Post-Punk.com

"Schmid’s voice is rendered in a Chris Isaak-like croon, and the production has a hushed quality you might expect from someone making a record in a Brooklyn apartment surrounded by neighbors. By pulling you in close to his voice, Schmid also pulls you close to the darkness that lurks behind his words... A slow, nocturnal drive down the dark side of memory lane. While electric guitars swoon and fade like passing lights on the side of the highway, Schmid sings about seeking pleasure in the present to escape the pain of his past."
–Invisible Oranges

"A spectral yet contemporary take on broodingly dark country... A sultry and vulnerable sensuality."
–Joy of Violent Movement

AVOLA - Zone

With its 50th release hot off the press, Brooklyn label Sleeping Giant Glossolalia misses no beat, continuing to build its diverse catalog via a summer's worth of new releases from across the spectrum of avant-rock, metal, noise, and electronic music.

Next up: the July 27th release of Zone, the debut album by Avola.

Avola is the newest incarnation of Portland-based musician/producer Vern Avola, known for her work under the name EMS, and as a member of Elrond and Prizehog.

Stream "The Feels" from Avola's debut album, Zone, here:
https://sleepinggiantglossolalia.bandcamp.com/album/avola-zone

SGG boss Michael Reisinger describes the Avola sound as "a squalling, disorienting world of heaviness... The journey is enthralling."

Zone is a place of high tension, where contrasting layers of sound combine in thrilling ways: the soft and the harsh, the light and the heavy, the playful and the profound, coexist and take on new forms. Epic, cinematic synth swells (e.g. "The Feels") and transcendent guitar drones (e.g. "Shhh" and "Sunrise") layer with glitchy beds of arcade-game beeps, white noise, and gunshot snares. Anthemic, soaring potential is kept in check by dissonance and disjointedness.

The end result feels quite urban – a symphony of city life, with all its simultaneous horror and magnificence – but Zone is in fact music of the desert, recorded and mixed by Avola at a house near Joshua Tree, California.

Zone is not music of any one genre – it is electronic in nature but possesses a deep heaviness that makes it relevant in the context of bands like Thrones and Oxbow with whom Avola has shared stages in the past.

Sleeping Giant Glossolalia will release Zone on cassette (as part of the label's ongoing cassette series that has also included Mick Barr, Growing, Opening Bell, and more) and on glow-in-the-dark vinyl (a split release with Nadine Records).

The album artwork was created by Kellesimone Waits.

Avola kicks off a US tour tonight in Long Beach!

4) Someone Already Did That

6) Sunrise
7) Twin Moons
8) Fahkd
9) Who Knows

"Portland-based musician Vern Avola makes electronic music that combines a ferocious wall of sound with a deceptively subtle sense of dynamics. One could call it noise music, except that Avola puts enough into weirdly shifting harmonics as she does into abrasion. One could also call it drone, but Avola's approach to synth music is too rhythmic, itchy, and restless to fit easily under that label. She's recently shared bills with artists including electro-pop eccentric EMA, metal band Big Business, and long-running experimental rock outfit Oxbow, to give you some idea of the difficulty of pigeonholing the project."

STERN - Missive: Sister Ships

"Stern’s brand of 'pop' is eerie and dissonant, each note seeming to melt into the ether as it’s played. Dreamy, dark... haunting undertones. The fragments of pop that remain are unique and should appeal to fans of industrial, ambient and metal that is a little 'out there.'"
–Decibel

"The quartet twists meticulously, almost seductively, through pop-rock songs refracted at disorienting angles. Stern himself is a provocative lyricist and an oddly endearing singer... His voice, like Scott Walker's, can quickly curve from a croon to a caterwaul... Like the best of Kayo Dot and Time of Orchids, it revels in the unexpected."
–Pitchfork

Brooklyn quartet Stern presents new album Missive: Sister Ships, out August 24th on Sleeping Giant Glossolalia.

Watch the video for the title track from Missive: Sister Ships, here:

https://www.decibelmagazine.com/2018/07/10/video-premiere-stern-missive-sister-ships/

Stern was founded in 2008 as an outlet for composer/vocalist Chuck Stern, former frontman of Time of Orchids, a band with releases on Cuneiform Records and John Zorn's Tzadik label.
After three albums, the project grew into its current incarnation, a full band consisting of Chuck Stern and three current and former members of Kayo Dot: Toby Driver, Keith Abrams, and Tim Byrnes. Missive: Sister Ships is the sixth Stern release in all, and the third to be made by the current lineup.

Self-described as "icy pop gems for aching hearts and doom freaks," the Stern sound is haunting and slippery. With a palette of slow tempos and minimal instrumentation, the band constructs a highly unpredictable reality where serenity can flip into nausea in the space of one note. Restraint and dissonance are used as weapons in these austere, strangely meditative songs, but the half-charred remains of familiar pop structures and melodies are ever-present in the periphery.

Chuck Stern's vocals evoke twisted crooners of past decades – Craig Wedren of Shudder To Think, in particular, as well as Mike Patton and Scott Walker. Other influences include the film scores of Ennio Morricone, the bleak beauty of Justin Broadrick's work in and out of Godflesh, and even the tangled webs of extreme metal outliers Gorguts.

Of new album Missive: Sister Ships, Stern says the lyrics address "exile and abandonment... It is a story about certain people in my life moving on without me: the death of my father, a terrible breakup with a girlfriend, Obama's departure."

Missive: Sister Ships was recorded by Daniel Schlett at Strange Weather Studios (DIIV, The Men, Liturgy), and mastered by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering (Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance, Ornament). The cover art was created by Ian Anderson of The Designer's Republic, known for their artwork for Pulp, Aphex Twin and Autechre.

The album will be released digitally and on vinyl.

Tracklist:
1) Tarry
2) Dragon Fruit
3) His Own Devices
4) Missive: Sister Ships
5) Dunce
6) Crucible of Combat
7) Grovel
8) Experiment Table

Chuck Stern - vocals
Toby Driver - guitar
Keith Abrams - drums
Tim Byrnes - synth

THE MANX + Ghettoblaster Magazine

"The video tells a tale of God’s controlling ways, countered by Satan’s teaching Man how to party, followed by the eventual murder of God and creation of 'Slug People.'"

Watch the video for “Plasmatic Debris (Tommy Meehan Remix)”, via Ghettoblaster Magazine, here.

Animated and slime-slathered, The Manx have morphed over time from an acoustic folk-punk three piece into their current form- an explosive, bubble-fueled, arcade-amped quintet featuring obscure instruments, cartoon stylings, and their own wonky lexicon. They are a surrealist, experimental punk act made up of full-time animators and artists for networks including Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. Studios, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon. Cynical and gritty but simultaneously whimsical, exotic uptempo orchestrations feature eccentricities such as the electric accordion, electric banjo, and upright bass. The Manx manifest an incredibly adrenalized, uniquely eclectic sound influenced by music ranging from GWAR, to The Locust, to They Might Be Giants.

This release is off of Mystery Skum and The Odyssey of Goo, which is a collection of previously unreleased tracks, remixes, reinterpretations, guest spots, and noise experiments, created as a companion to the avant-garde punk act's last LP, Voyage in Bad Taste. Guest features include Justin Roiland of Rick and Morty, Buzz Osborne (The Melvins), Ryan Kattner (Man Man, Honus Honus), JR Slayer aka Cody Votolato (Blood Brothers, Head Wound City), as well as many other respected artists.

Out today: OPENING BELL - Compound Eyes/Loma Atomal

Brooklyn label Sleeping Giant Glossolalia drops its 50th release today: the new EP by label boss Michael Reisinger's band, Opening Bell.

Listen and buy, here:

https://sleepinggiantglossolalia.bandcamp.com/album/opening-bell-compound-eyes-loma-atomal

Past releases in the Sleeping Giant Glossolalia catalog include music by Insect Ark, Growing, Couch Slut, Mick Barr, and Vaz. Reisinger is a central figure in the NYC scene, as musician, label owner, and prolific booker and promoter of live shows, bringing together sounds from across the spectrum of avant-heavy music.

Opening Bell's new EP is a gem: two tracks' worth of existential horror, recorded, mixed and mastered by Steve Austin of Today Is The Day at his rural Maine compound, Austin Enterprise. The sound is mournful and visceral, conjured through a combination of live instruments and electronics. The new EP's two songs carry the spirit of Today Is The Day's more introspective, heart-wrenching moments, as well as the post-industrialism of bands like OvO. Elements of psych, doom, and industrial meld into highly emotional music.

"Mind melting assault similar to artists like Nine Inch Nails... Depressing and downtrodden... Sonic landscapes defined by their mystical and twisted landscapes."
–Two Guys Metal Reviews

"Compound Eyes/Loma Atomal" is available digitally and on cassette as part of SGG's ongoing cassette series.

Upcoming shows include a slot on the "Into the Aether II" festival, alongside Krallice, Skullflower, and Gnaw.

Opening Bell, live:
Aug 5 - Brooklyn, NY @ The Glove w/ Nastie Band, Stern, Vat of Acid
Sept 25 - Brooklyn, NY @ Saint Vitus w/ Bloater, River Cult
Oct 6 - Portland, ME @ Geno's - Into the Aether II Festival w/ Krallice, Skullflower, Gnaw

CHAINLINKS: July 2018

July's installment of Chainlinks is here! Roughly once a month we pick the brains of our friends and colleagues to find out what's inspiring them... Today we have lists from Josh Strawn (Azar Swan, Vaura, Vain Warr, Primal Architecture Records), Itarya Rosenberg (Low Dose), and Vern Avola (Avola, EMS, Elrond, Prizehog).

øøø

Josh Strawn (Azar Swan, Vaura, Vain Warr, Primal Architecture Records)

1) Xenofeminism, by Helen Hester

Over the last year or so, Helen Hester has become one of my favorite thinkers and writers contributing to the arena of political thought. I became aware of her upon discovering the Xenofeminism manifesto, since she is one of the more vocal of its authors and one who has not chosen to remain anonymous. XF wants to accomplish a "politics without purity." One of the most standout slogans is "If nature is unjust, change nature!"

http://politybooks.com/bookdetail/?isbn=9781509520626&subject_id=7

2) Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker

Leonard Cohen is an artist best loved in private. While he's joined the ranks of Jeff Buckley and Nick Cave as a kind of cultural signifier of a certain kind of annoying person, I'd almost claim that it's not liking these artists that's the problem, it's ostentatiously liking them publicly. Because this is intimate music. Between you and nobody else. Leonard Cohen has always been there for me in the worst times, and these are the worst of times. His voice is a warm ghost that's always haunting us.

3) Damnation, directed by Bela Tarr

One day I'll look back and know what it meant that I keep returning to visit these bleak scenes and listen to these desperate conversations. The nightclub, the dog in the rain, the staring out the windows...

Itarya Rosenberg (Low Dose)

1) Alok

Alok is an activist, artist, poet - all understatements but true. They are also a warrior, a goddess, and a master. I melt at their honesty and hope, us, as a society and people, can live up to them for a fucking second. Buy their poetry, art and fashion. Go see them speak if you can. Support their superior cause.

https://www.alokvmenon.com

2) Ike Reiko - You, Baby

Fuck, this album spoke to me immediately and I was completely unaware of it's existence until my partner turned me onto it about a year ago. It oozes sex. Ike Reiko was also involved (at maybe too young of an age, but real) in Japanese revenge porn movies via "women in prison style savage eroticism" "while they laid to waste the enemy (men)." It's like the ultimate Serge Gainsbourg records vs. jazz vs. "erotic pop". Do yourself an immense favor and pick up this record.

3) Coin Under Tongue - Reception

I don't know if this link works. So I apologize if it doesn't and fucks up your computer. But please, please, please find this record correctly if you can. I became hip to Coin Under Tongue randomly record shopping one day in NY about 10 years ago. The store was playing their first full length - I was smitten and bought it on the spot. Later on I was a buyer for Relapse Records' third party mail order and was offered their second full length "Reception" for distro. I bought it. The variety and depth and just pure fantastic song writing killed me. I told everyone I could about the record and even tried to get them to play Philly asap. Their label head said he couldn't find the singer at the time and that became an immediate bust, tragically. I show so many punk collectors this record and they had no idea it existed and are always stoked. So fucking check it if you don't know it. Thanks for humoring me on shit I dig!!!

1) Johnny Rogers

Johnny Rogers is a long time hero of mine. You can see why here:

2) Kurt Vonnegut

3) Friendship

THE MANX + Gear Gods

“Nothing is held back when it comes to repping the slimy, punky mystery that surrounds every fiber of this band’s being. At the core, there’s a folk rock element to The Manx’s sound, but that’s about as close to nailing down their style as you can get before the oozy, Bunglian, black metal, punk, and retro-futuristic tentacles take hold... we can’t get enough of it.”
-Gear Gods
